17 and counting

Has anyone seen this show about the Dugar Family? First off this women is crazy to have given birth to 17 kids and has one on the way...yikes.

Secondly, does anyone know what religion they are? DH and I happened to watch this show for the first time and the oldest son had proposed to a girl in Floriday (they live i thnk in NE). This girl he had met only a few times they have never dated or even kissed. They call it courtship and the parents have to approve of the proposal. They are only allowed to hold hands throughout the engaged period, no kissing, no hugging and no sex. They must always have a chaparone with to make sure the temption does not become overpowering!

Has anyone else heard of this?

Re: 17 and counting

  • They fallow the religions teachings of Quiverfull (www.Quiverfull.com) and the kids are only able to court.

  • This is completely crazy!

    I especially like this part:

Ken Carpenter has a good business producing videos for some of Nashville's biggest names. And what about planning for his children's college education? He isn't sure about college.

The Carpenter children are home-schooled. Ken Carpenter hopes his sons find professions and that his daughters learn to be mothers. He believes that it is a woman's primary function to become a mother.

I love children and can't wait to be amom, but this is not all I'm worth! A women is so much more.

  • I checked out that website and found this article -

     home.att.net/~nathan.wilson/brthcntl.htm

I like how they say that in Biblical days they encouraged and welcomed numerous children - well duh, back then infant mortality was high, so you had to have a bunch to ensure one lived. PLUS, children were used for labor, so the more you had the less work you had to do.

    Pisses me off.

  • I've heard that this old-fashioned version of courting is popular among some fundamentalist Christians, and with some older, born-again adults. It's kind of cute, really, although it seems outrageously impossible to adhere to in this day and age.

And really, the Duggars need to be stopped. What does Dad do that he can support all those kids? I hope taxpayers don't supplement what their TLC specials don't cover.
