Today, after everyone else had left, my boss called me in to him office and let me go. It did not come as a surprise to me -- I have handled his accounts since I was hired 3 months ago, I know where the money isn't -- but still I was hoping things would be okay until after Christmas, especially since the girl I was hired to replace is leaving at the end of the week (and she makes more than me). To add insult to perceived injury, the girl hired after me, with far less experience, was kept, so I am not sure that I believe the excuse that was given that the work just isn't there.
So now I'm depressed and worried and scared, so I am having a pity party for Christmas. I saved most of my salary, so I am not very worried about money, and spent very little on Christmas gifts. But still, the whole situation has put a damper on my holiday festiveness.
Just bummed and sad and wanted to vent. Hope everyone else has better news.
Re: Christmas Pity Party
I'm sorry. Losing a job is never good, but the holidays make it even worse.
Were you Full Time? Do they owe you any redundancy pay?
Oh no! I am so sorry to hear that! The timing totally sucks, but just think - next year you could find a new even BETTER job!
And it's true you are already off for the holidays
((hugs)) and happiness vibes!
We're headed to the Maldives on Christmas Eve!

Thanks everyone! I was feeling very sorry for myself last night and just wanted to wallow in self pity. This morning the sun was out and the weather is unseasonably cool (it was the same temperature here today as it was in NOLA) and I had a busy day of all the house work that has been put off while I have been at work.
@aMrs -- no redundancy pay, I was only employed for 3 months (91 days to be exact), but according to the Fair Work Australia termination policy, I am entitled to a week's worth of wages as "notice" as I was terminated effective immediately. I am also entitled to the annual leave I accrued but did not take (5 days, with leave loading). Since I was the one who handled the accounts and payroll, I know how much I should get in my check and I have no qualms about making sure I get it -- or going to the Ombudsman if I do not.
I can't say I ever felt welcome or wanted at the office, and they certainly treated me as though I was fresh out of high school (despite the fact that I have 14 years experience as a paralegal/legal secretary in the US). Even if I asked for more work, or suggested that maybe I could handle more than answering the phones and fetching the mail, I was told they did not have anything I could do. In the end it was probably the best decision for everyone, but I still feel as though it was handled badly, though maybe everyone who is let go feels that way.
On to bigger and better things in 2012...
