Re: Good Monday Morning Randoms

  • Good Morning!

How's everyone progressing on the shopping?

Since we're celebrating early, I order 2 things online and I'm crossing my fingers that they're here by Sunday!

I have a few more things to get but I'd say we're about 80% done.

  • Nick and I went to the WORST company Christmas party ever on Saturday.  I'm wishing we hadn't gone.  The food was terrible, the wine was terrible, and the entertainment was painfully awful.  Seriously, who hires a magician to entertain a room full of mostly middle-aged adults?  The guy did "tricks" that would only be cool to a room of 10 year olds.  What's even worse, they guy's act was an hour and a half long and the bar wasn't even open during that time!  LOL.

Ok.  I'm done whining.  Sorry guys.

Nick and I did 90% of our shopping on Saturday morning.  It was great.  We even spent less than I thought we would.  I have everything wrapped and under the tree too (except for the two gifts I ordered that should arrive this week).

Oh my.  The only thing redeeming is that I probably would have laughed at how terrible it was.  Magicians are never appropriate for adults unless they're in Vegas.

Yeah, we were having a great time at our table quietly snickering at his act.

  • wow, magicians?

I found out you can make tea from pine tips yesterday at my herbalism class. I don't know why, but I found that really fascinating.

  • Good morning,

Back on the other side of the state. Sad about it. It's going to be a long winter. Before I left yesterday, H laid on me, put his arms around me and said in the absolute saddest voice "I don't want you to go". Darn us trying to be all grown up and mature about this! Sigh. At least he's coming home Friday. It'll be nice for him to see his family and friends.

Christmas shopping is almost done I guess. On the backburner until Saturday at 5PM. After that, I'll finish up. Not too much more to do. We put a nice dent in it over the weekend.

I was telling B about the possibility of a happy hour after Christmas. He was excited. So...if anyone's really interested in meeting strangers at a bar or restaurant the week after Christmas, do let me know.

    Wop- magicians? Sounds... lovelyHuh?

    Anniversary
  • Good morning!

Geez, Wop, that sounds like a terrible party.  I feel bad for the magician.  How awkward for everyone in the room!

BnG, sorry it was so hard saying good bye yesterday.  (My) B and I lived in seperate parts of the state for college and it sucked saying good bye at the end of the weekends.

My Christmas shopping is about 70% done.  This weekend I finished shopping for B and for the kid I'm sponsoring this year.  We still have pieces of gifts to get for almost everyone else, though.

  • Morning, pals.

Wop - we had a singing (poorly) murder mystery at a work party before.  It was embarassing for all involved.  The magician sounds painful.  I'm sorry.

    Good job, holiday shoppers!

We got the tree up and decorated this weekend.  I'm declaring that it's the last year we'll be in this house for Christmas.  I said it last year, but this year I mean it.

BnG - I'm all for a get together.  I don't know if that week will work for Jim and I, though.  Family visits, and taking advantage of school break for our kindergartner.  Another time for us, but I hope you guys get a group for an outing.  Meeting folks from online is weird for the first time, but it's how I've made a lot of friends in my adulthood.  I love these ladies.

  • My grandma isn't doing very good right now.  The surgery that she had last week turned out not to be as successful as they had originally thought.  They put a metal device into her spine to correct the broken vertebrae.  Except, it turns out that her 80-year-old, osteoperosis spine couldn't handle the device and her spine has begun to "collapse and twist" under the weight of it.  Sad

She's waiting to hear from the surgeon about what they're going to do about that.

She was hoping to be released from the hospital today, but it sounds like that's not going to happen, given this complication.

  • In other news, was there something in the water last month?  Freakishly full moon?

In the past four days, three people I know have announced that they're pregnant.

    This.  Smile

  • Oh, Kasa, that's awful.  Your poor grandma and family!  Especially for this to happen so far away from home.  Does she have another family member with her?

Long distance is never any fun. :-(  Hope the months pass quickly for both of you.

And we're always down for Happy Hour - we're away for much of December/January but we'd attend the next gathering!

Oh no, I'm sorry Kasa.  I hope they get something figured out soon.

  • I already mentioned this on FB - but Toby passed his prescreen exam to become a therapy dog this weekend!  We start classes in March and I'm super excited.

He did way better on the exam than I even thought he would - and I was way more nervous.  I guess test anxiety doesn't go away after college. :-P

My step-grandpa is there with her.  His son and wife went over there for the day to visit on Saturday (they're in Indiana, so shorter drive.)

My mom said if she's going to be there much longer, she's going to go there.

  • We just found out, the fight against cancer for our family's friend is over.  I'll miss his smile and laugh at Jim's work events so much.  But I'm glad his body doesn't have to fight anymore.

That's so great!  What's involved in the testing?  And the training?  And what exactly what he do as a therapy dog?

Sorry, I don't know anything about this, although it sounds cool.

Although, I have been to a couple of funeral homes that have therapy dogs, and I love the idea.

I'm so sorry, GRSP.  Such a difficult loss, I'm sure.

  • I cant believe there is only 13 days til Christmas. I just have to mail out 4 packages at the end of the week then I can do a sigh of relief.

Although, I have been to a couple of funeral homes that have therapy dogs, and I love the idea.

As for what they do - it can vary.  They may just visit local retirement/nursing homes, hospitals, funeral homes, etc. to lift the spirits of those there.  They can also be more "active" therapy dogs, in that they are part of someone's therapy.  For example, some schools use them to help troubled readers - they read to the dog instead of a person because it gives them practice w/o being self-concious about reading in front of humans.

For the testing, it was basically just checking his temperment and how he reacted to different situations.  So how he reacted when I met and shook hands w/a stranger, when we walked through a crowd, basic obedience, if he accepted petting/brushing from a stranger, if a toy was thrown how he reacted, how he obeyed when we walked/stopped/turned, how he reacted when we met a stranger w/a dog, etc.

The ideal is for him to never react w/o cues from me.  He barely reacted to any of the distractions (he turned toward some in the crowd, but never pulled) and stayed by my side like he was supposed to - I did have to cue him so he didn't sniff the other dog, but that was about it.

We have 8 weeks of classes and some job shadowing before we take a final exam.  I'm confident he'll do great with some more practice - and I have a lot to learn too!

  • GRSP, I am so sorry about your friend.

Kasa, I am sorry to hear about your Grandma.  I hope the surgeon has some ideas to help her.

Juli, Congrats to Toby ( and you!) Who are you getting certified through?  Gracie is certified through TDI.  I would love to re up her certs and due some volunteer work over here.

BNG, long distance is so hard!  My H and were the reverse of you guys last spring.  I lived in GR and he commuted to the east side.  Now I live on the East side.  I miss GR, I think you will really love it over there.

  • I am trying my damnest to stay off google right now for 2 reasons.  1. baby J has had blood tinged spit up.  We have an appt with the Dr in and hr.  And I know Dr Google will do nothing to calm my fears.  And 2. b/c my gift from Scott arrived and it has the name of the company on the package.

  • Thanks, Juli and Kasa.  I think we did most of our grieving over the summer.  We were crushed then. Today we're sad, but glad he's not in pain or being so drugged that he was out of it.

  • Juli, therapy dogs are used in counseling too.  I did some research on how they [mostly dogs and horses] are being used used for all kinds of treatment.  Animals making people well is awesomeness.

WMTD - I'm not sure it that has reciprocity with TDI too, but I'm sure the tests are pretty similar.  How has your experience been w/Gracie?

Yeah, get off Google.  It could be something as simple as the dry weather making his sinuses dry bleed a little, and drain into stomach.  Or, um... are your parts cracked at all from feeding?

The package thing is funny.  Don't look.  It might be a ruse. ;)
