Gift Suggestions for new Army BIL

Hi ladies! My sister recently married an Army Sniper and they're moving to Germany in the spring per his orders. They met not long ago and were quick to get married. Truth be told, I haven't even met him yet. I'm having a little bit of difficulty thinking of something to get him for Christmas.

I asked my sister for advice on what he would enjoy, but she said when she asked him if he had a Christmas list, he replied that he enjoys giving more than receiving. Well I do too, but I know people are still going to shop for me!

He likes to read and he is a fan of one of my favorite authors, so I got him a copy of the latest book. But I'm wondering if there's anything that would be a nice comfort for them over in Germany or for when he deploys.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

  • I wouldn't give anything they have to pack to take with them.  I would find out his favorite restaurant and give him a GC to there.  I know if we were moving to Germany, J would be hitting up our favorite places and would love to get GCs for Longhorn or our favorite sushi place.

Once he deploys, maybe then you can send him comforts from home.

  • A small display stand for challenge coins?  My H has a nice display case at home, but he wants a smaller one for his desk at work so he can have a few there on display!

Why not?  They get a full allocation for a move to Germany, and they don't have to pack any of it themselves.  I would be sad if people didn't get me gifts just b/c I was moving 5 months later.  I mean, don't get him a giant couch that may not fit in their future home, but I'm guessing you weren't planning on that at all :)

I wouldn't get anything specific for Germany.  I say this as someone who's had orders change to entirely different countries last minute. I for sure wouldn't trust something this far out.

Just get him an amazon gift card and be done with it.  He can use it for a book or a kindle download, or even a kindle.  Plus, if he hangs on to it, amazon ships to APOs.  They were a lifesaver when we were overseas.

  • He probably felt uncomfortable telling you what he wanted since y'all have never met. I agree with an Amazon gift card since he can get any thing he may want or need, and it's generous and not too personal since you don't actually know him well.
