Toddler Cough Question

How long do you let your LO go with a cough before you take them in to be seen.  I don?t want to be that parent that runs their kid to the clinic because of a cough if you know what I mean.  We have been doing breathing treatments to try and help break it up, Vicks on his chest and feet every night, and a humidifier in his room.  I just wondered how long you will go before you take them in to be looked at.

Re: Toddler Cough Question

  • We share a wedding date (9/4/04)!

With our boys, if it's just a dry cough we typically just do what you're doing (humidifier, Vicks, etc.) unless they start running a fever or develop other symptoms (runny noses w/anything other then clear mucus).  Sometimes that cough can just be due to the dry air this time of year especially with the furnace running.  Make sure he's getting lots of fluids during the day.  Nothing worse than getting to the doctor for them to tell you 'everything's fine'.  Been there a few times.

  • Normally I wait 3-4 days unless they aren't sleeping much at night due to the cough etc.  However, on Friday I took DD2 in because DD1 already had an appointment.  Turns out she had pneumonia on the right side!  Never would have guessed it since she just started coughing on Wednesday night, and was only running a fever off and on...otherwise she was acting fine.

My girls don't typically act very sick when they are even horribly sick so it's hard to judge.   Seems like if I think it's something minor, it's major and if I think they're really sick, it's nothing bad. If you're going to be around family anytime soon, might be worth taking him in to be checked out.  That way if he is contagious, the antibiotics can do their work before spreading to anyone else.

  • I've had those "everything is fine" dr visits, but I've also been surprised.  Last time I took DS1 in for coughing (he had a couple coughing fits and running around where he coughed to the point he threw up...) I was afraid I was headed for one of those "fine" trips, but we ended up with breathing treatments, prednisone, and now a preventative inhaler.  It's so hard to know with kids.  If you feel something isn't right, I'd probably just take him in and let them decide!
