We are most likely moving to Amsterdam

this Spring or early Summer. My DH has been asked if he would be interested in a position in Amsterdam (it would be a promotion for him).  It is a internal job, he is flying to Amsterdam to meet with the CFO, Legal Counsel and HR on Thursday.  It is crazy as I have only been here in Spain for 7 months, but what you going to do.  Good news is I think I will be able to work in The Netherlands...here I can't unless I get company sponsorship.

I know there was at least 1 IN that lives/lived in Amsterdam...anyone remember who?

DH's office is in Utretch outside Amsterdam, but there is talk it will be moving closer to Amsterdam by the time we would need to move.

  • Cool!! Good Luck with everything. That is great that you have the opportunity to see and live in so many places.

  • I'm the one that lives in Amsterdam (and I actually went to college in Utrecht).

Sounds like a great opportunity for you guys!

And yeah, you should be allowed to work here if you're here legally (through YH company visa) but I bet Onesly and TotZiens know more about those rules. (I'm a Dutch citizen, so never had to deal with that.)

Amsterdam-Utrecht is a crappy commute! I did it for 2.5 years and while it was okay the first 2 weeks or during school vacations, I really hated it the rest of the time. It's really really busy, both by car (ginormous traffic jam the whole way) and by train (often had to stand). So I'll cross my fingers for him that the office will move closer to Amsterdam. If it would stay in Utrecht, you should look into actually moving there. While it's smaller than Amsterdam, it really is a cool city.

If you have any questions about Amsterdam/Utrecht specifically, pm me.

  • I work here and got my work permit on a piggy-back with DH's work permit.  Our company's law firm handled it all, so I can't get you the nitty gritty of it all, but if your DH is on a "skilled migrant worker's visa" then you're set, automatically!

I live further south, down in Eindhoven, but let me know if you have any other questions and I'll be happy to help!!!

So glad to get another NL nestie!

  • We are also moving over late spring/early summer!  We are just getting back to the states today after a week long research/house hunting/school interview trip.  It seems that it will be a friendly place to live!
  • Good luck to your DH! I've heard only good things about living in the Netherlands from my friends here who have, it's on our short list if an opportunity comes up. Have fun with the planning!

  • Yeah I am getting more excited as time passes.  DH goes for his interview/meet and greet tomorrow.  I guess as some point we will get the relocation package as well.   He will be starting his position as of 2/1/2012 (as Senior Manager), which is good since we have tickets to go to Argentina in January that is in conjunction with a work trip of his.  We won't have to move right away, but we are told Spring/Early Summer 2012.  Hopefully by then they will have decided where the office is going to be relocated to.  I don't mind living in Utretch if we need to...both DH and I hate long commutes so we plan to live close to the office.

I am not sure what we should ask for as part of the relocation package?  For the Nesties who came to The Netherlands for a work opportunity is there anything specific we need to ask for?
