I think they are both great and you can't go wrong with either. Both have tons of free books available as well. Both can borrow books at the library as well.
I have two Kindles and the Kindle app on my phone. I am a diehard Amazon user so really the Kindle is the only thing that makes sense for me. I love them. You should go to Best Buy and play with all of them and see which you like the best
When helped students use them in the past, I prefered the nook. I thought it was more user friendly and I liked that you could get library books with it. But now, I don't think there's a huge difference between them. I'd be perfectly happy to have either.
Personally, I prefer the touch screens and I actually like a backlit screen. I've only read books on an iPad though, not a Kindle or Nook. I just turned the screen to sepia and was good to go. I loved having the light so I didn't have to bother DH with my lamp when I was trying to read.
