We use a un-home daycare for the girls. We've been running into a issue where our provider is closed a lot. I get that because she's a in home daycare she can choose to close, but at this point my vacation days are used only for daycare coverage for when she is closed. Because dh is gone and travels for work I am the one who stays home. It's getting ridiculous at how many days she's closed.
Do you have back up for your daycare? If so, who is it?
Re: back up daycare?
We go to an in-home daycare. She gets 2 weeks vacation For the week after Christmas, DH and I are just splitting up the days. For the summer, we may have MIL come up.
For non-scheduled sick days, our in-home lady has 2 assistants that can help if she is out. Or we found a babysitter that is also available during the day. She's a SAHM that is looking to do babysitting to make some extra money. We found her on care.com . Not sure if it services your area or not but they have "care on call" for last minute sitters. You do have to pay a fee to sign up. We paid for 3 months and have found a couple of people and will cancel the service when it is up for renewal.
We ran into a similar issue when my aunt who said she'd watch Alex for us on Wednesdays was more often than not calling us Tuesday night to say she wasn't available the next day. That meant H had to take a sick day, or I had to take a day off without pay.
Eventually it got to the point we couldn't handle it anymore and put Alex in a daycare center, for some stability. With the schedule we have going right now, if someone can't do a day, one of us, H or I, has to take a day off. After my leave, we'll be putting the girls in daycare two days a week because my mother found out today she will now be working on Fridays. H had to put in for a vacation day to cover this week, and we're hoping I'll be home by next Friday.
We are really lucky with our in-home provider. She only takes the basic holidays (so, like 9 of them? All of which we have off from work anyway) and then a couple of extra days here or there. We've never had a problem covering for her, usually because we're off anyway, or one of our moms will watch Nora for us for one day.
I'm sorry your DCP takes so many extra days off--that sounds like a really stressful situation for you! I'd maybe ask her if she has anyone she'd recommend to watch the kids when she is unable to?

This! My mom runs an in-home daycare and she RARELY takes time off. She takes the holidays that everyone gets anyway, plus a week vacation every other year. If something ever comes up, I go over and cover for her (I know all of the parents/kids) but if I weren't able to, I know that she has people she'd recommend if asked. I think it's crazy that your lady is taking so much time... that has to be stressful
Our crazy, wonderful life
Unless it's a family emergency - that seems ridiculous. We're at an in-home too and I totally get the need to close for vacation (heck, I get 5 weeks a year, daycare providers deserve it too, right?) but three days in one week? How much notice do you get?
Our daycare is closed two weeks in the end of the Summer (woof) and then the week b/t Christmas and New Years. They also are closed a number of Holidays - some I get (like MLK day) and some I don't have (Veteran's Day).
If the sitter needs time off and DH can't watch Zac we have a slew of family on stand-by. DH's dad is always more than willing to take Z if we need him, and as long as my mom is off work she'll take him.
Worse case scenario, I take a sick day @ work.
