Mums Bumps and BBTs

Hi all! How's life? Ups? Downs?

QOTW: Have you made any parenting choices that others think are strange (inspired by dinner with friends the other day, one was still BF at 25 months and was happy when we didn't think it was strange).

Please let me know if you have any QOTW suggestions :)

Re: Mums Bumps and BBTs

  • Ups: Baby is due on Friday.  We're super excited for her to be here.

Downs: I'm worried she's going to be at least a week late. I'm really having some hip pain when trying to sleep. I just keep reminding myself it's only a few more days.

QOTW: I don't think we've set ourselves up for strange parenting choices yet, but I'm sure some of them will be to someone. We'll see!

QOTW suggestion: What was key to your post birth recovery? Anything you would recommend I do/don't do after coming home from the hospital.

  • Ups; Still chugging along.  Baby should be here soon!  I feel very prepared for bringing home baby and cannot wait to meet my sweet little guy.

Downs: Not sleeping, contractions everyday, the incessant phone calls from my crazyass stepmother, overly excited father and worrywort MIL every single day to check if I've gone into labor yet.

QOTD: I don't think any of our choices so far are out of the norm...but only time will tell!

I like chelbel's suggestion.  What is your best postpartum recovery advice?

  • Ups, DD went to her daycare lady today for an hour by herself and she didn?t cry! Hope that continues tomorrow. She?s taking steps alone and getting into everything.

Downs: She?s been waking very early in the morning lately...ughhh.

QOTD: My choice to CD, co-sleep in the beginning, and then moving her to her own room when she hit 10 months. And my not fixing her meat. Apparently the fact that I don?t cook meat for her makes me a bad mom. I do give her fish every now and then, and I make sure she?s getting lots of iron. Oh, and my only feeding whole grain things, no white flour makes me a freak, too.

  • Ups: DD is rolling and being cute

Downs: DD is rolling is doesn't want to be on her tummy so she rolls, screams and then I flip her...and everything starts again!

QOTD: We CD but people think that's cool so no issue there but we plan to let her decided when to stop BF (to a point) and that'll be interesting when she gets older as most people stop by a year here.

  • Ups: My part-time hours started this week! Yesterday I met a friend I hadn't seen in weeks for breakfast. Today I slept a bit and got some packages ready to mail. Tomorrow I have prenatal massage. Just a few extra hours has certainly improved my days.

Downs: I so want this baby out! This pregnancy has been harder physically and I am struggling.

QOTW: Have you made any parenting choices that others think are strange? We didn't baby proof our place; instead we taught BabyD what not to touch. Took about three days of working on it once he started crawling but after that I could put him in different settings and he knew not to touch outlets, cords, phones, computers, remotes, or the electronics (stereo, tv, etc). Came in super handy when we visited relatives since I didn't expect any of them to baby proof for us. There are people shocked that we don't have foamies on every single sharp corner, a partition around our entertainment center, cords under special covers, latch on the toilet lids, or have everything moved up out of his current reach.

  • Hello IN moms!  Chelbel, I hope your LO comes on time rather than late.  The waiting at the end can be tough.

Ups: DD is growing like a weed and is a generally happy baby.  I love that when she's awake she pretty much only cries when she's gotten too hungry (need to respond faster to those cues!) or needs a diaper change.  She's rarely fussy for what seems like no reason and usually it's due to gas.

Downs: LO got a cold over the weekend.  Lots of very green snot!  Luckily she didn't run a fever and seems to be getting over it now.  I'm glad it seems to have been short lived.

QOTD:  We CD and a lot of people think it's weird and others find it interesting and others are just surprised. Other than that I can't think of anything I do that others find strange.  Oh, I don't dress LO in a gazillion layers inside the house and apparently she's going to freeze according to my ILs and other older people.

  • Chelbel, fingers crossed she comes soon!

Ups: I have 7 full days of work left before maternity leave. I also went to the GP yesterday who said baby is head down. I know it can still change, but I'm hoping he stays that way! Also, we just got back from our first NCT class which was really good.

Downs: See my whine from yesterday. I want to sleep. Through the night. Without having back pain or hip pain.

QOTD: Don't think we're looking at anything controversial yet, but we'll see.

  • Ups: My SIL is here this week so I am actually able to do laundry, make a meal, take a shower, etc without V on my heel. It's lovely.

Downs: V has started tantrums. I hate it. We are pretty proactive about it and it isn't awful, but I do not enjoy. Also, we are going away for Xmas weekend and I am already having anxiety about her schedule or lack of while we are there and what that will mean for me.

QOTD: I don't feed her meat, and do not plan to. Generally, I focus on her schedule and don't deviate wildly unlessi t's for something important, for some reason this annoys people. We CD'd while we were in the US. I am still bf'ing and have no plan to stop until she pretty much feels done with it. Like Faye said we didn't babyproof (except for baby gate at stairs and one latch on a cupboard with all potential toxins) and don't really plan to. None of this is upsetting to most people, but randomly we've gotten comments about some of it.

  • Hi ladies.

Alexandra caught her first cold and yesterday it was so bad.  It was day 5, and thank goodness that was the worst of it.  I stayed home with her, and I'm so glad I did.  She couldn't sleep, and I felt so badly for her.  She has a nasty chesty cough and runny nose, but had her checked by the pediatrician and it's just a cold.

She is finally walking on her own, and almost running.  This really is a fun age.

Downs: Sleep, but hopefully it's getting better now that she is starting to feel better.

QOTW:   Choosing to work full time.  My closest friends chose to be SAHMs after having kids.  I need to meet some new mommy friends who also choose to work. It's been weighing on my mind a lot lately, trying to figure out what the "right" balance for us is.

  • Ups: N loves the Christmas tree - but we need to keep an eye on her cos she can bum shuffle her way over to it! She got one decoration off it last night (I had put shiny "safe" ones down low for this reason) and there's a little bell also that she loves - will spend ages shaking it and giggling. Very cute

Downs: She is sick with a chest infection so is on antibiotics since Monday.  She sounds like a purring kitten when sucking her thumb... sounds cute, but not good.  And I think her ears are at her as well though the dr said they were ok.  She took ages to settle last night, which is not like her at all.  Took 2 attempts to get her bottle finished and was up another couple of times after that. And woke twice in the night, though we didn't go into her... she settled again before I got out of bed!

QOTW: I suppose the thing that we did was to go against current recommendations in regards to her place of sleep... we moved her to her own room at 5 weeks old and I'm so glad we did.  Everyone sleeps much better and she has been sleeping through the night since she was 2 months old. She was right in the next room to us with doors open so we weren't too worried.

I got a bedtime routine started then too and we have stuck to that since then.  It has worked even if she's not in her own cot in another house.  I remember my SIL laughing at me back then telling me it was waaaay too early to do that, but she's not laughing now! My 9mth old is a better sleeper than her 30mth old!!

Also, we didn't get a baby monitor until she was nearly 4 months old and then only because I couldn't hear her if I was in the garden! Did get some comments on that one for sure!!

  • I hear you Irish, people have been kind of annoying about our 'schedule' too, like mad when it inconveniences them. But I will say, just to play devil's advocate, it might not be our schedule that makes V a 'good' sleeper (or you SILs a bad one)...my bff does virtually exactly what we do and her son just struggles with sleep. Sometime I think it's the child, not the method.

Agree with this - we did the same exact things with both our kids and ds didn't sleep through the night til he was 8 months, and dd has been doing it since 8 weeks.

  • Hi!

Ups: It's Christmas time AND my best friend is coming back from India for Christmas in a week.

Downs: I need a new bed. For the last month or so my bed has been killing my back :(

Choices we've made that made others give us the side eye? We still room share and I BF'd until relatively recently.

And now I'm a Bump as well as a Mum :)

  • Ups: We got a great pic of the baby on Monday and you can clearly see his face this time (last time he was really scrunched up and he looked like he had no nose). I know I am biased but I think he is really cute!

Downs: I am in excruciating pain in my back.  I left school on tears on Monday because I was in so much pain.  I got stuck in one of the chairs and took me about 10 mins to get up. I went right to the doc who is sent me to physio.  Apparently my hormones have loosed the joints in my lower back too much and everything else is trying to over-compensate for it.  Physio strapped me me up and gave me some exercises to do but its too inflamed for any treatments.  I have to go back next week.  This is the worst pain I have ever been in in my life, there is no relief.  Its just 24 hrs of pain regardless if I am standing, sitting or laying down.

QOTD: Not really sure yet.  I have gotten a few strange looks from people when I say we plan to CD.  Usually I have to explain that we are planning to use modern cloth, not the ones with folding and pins and then it sounds a bit better.  Some people have been really interested in learning about it especially if they don't have kids yet.  Oh well, I really want to try it regardless of what others say.

  • Oh, I forgot another up! The hair on my legs has apparently stopped growing. I have not shaved for 2-3 weeks and they feel like I shaved this morning! It is really good especially since I cannot bend over to reach them right now anyway.  Maybe this means we will have a hairy baby? LOL

I hear you... I'm not gloating about our great little sleeper, it's my SIL who bemoans the fact that her youngest is the worst sleeper ever... (she has 4) and she puts it down to the fact that he shared their room longest out of any of them due to circumstances when he was born (they were living in my parents house!).

Sometimes I wonder about having another baby and only because I don't think we could be as lucky as we have been this time around!!
