Moms: BF question

I'm not going to have time to take a breastfeeding class before the babe gets here, what are some good online resources for reading that I can do ahead of time?

Re: Moms: BF question

  • Wow, Colleen, I didn't realize how close you are to the end! Eeeek! So exciting.

    www.kellymom.com is a good one.

You'll be fine, though. Go into it knowing it'll be challenging, but nothing you can't get through in one way or another. Lean on the LCs and (hopefully) your pedi for support. A friend of mine told me that if I could get through the first three weeks, I'd be golden. She said the first three weeks are the hardest.

For me, I broke it up into smaller goals. Get through our time in the hospital. Get through the first week at home. And honestly, I was lucky, and things got easy after just the first couple of days at home.

Good luck! Do you have a labor buddy?

  • I read The Womanly Art of Breasfeeding and I got more out of that than the class I took! I agree with leaning on the LC and check into your local Le Leche League. I know we have an LLL support group in my area that meets 2 times per week and they are super awesome. Just being around a bunch of women who are going through/ have gone through the same thing as you makes such a difference!

  • I just remembered you're in Boston. I read a blog written by a mom who lives in Boston--she had a ton of challenges while breastfeeding (I think her son was tongue-tied, among other things) and she found tremendous support in a class at Isis Parenting, so you may want to check them out. She was able to bring her baby in there with her and the LCs gave her (apparently) great advice. Just something for you to keep in your reserves as a resource!

Yeah, Isis has a free BF drop in group which is great! I'm planning on taking their new baby/mom group class there too.

I don't have a labor buddy! Are you volunteering? ;)

Sure am! I can DM or e-mail you my number?

  • I echo what everybody else has said. Also wanted to add my favorite resource (besides kellymom)

Dr. Jack Newman is the breastfeeding god and his website is amazing. The video clips are especially great.

  • I read Mothering Multiples and looked around on kellymom. I also saw an LC every day that I was in the hospital and once when I got home. The one I had come to my house was the most helpful but definitely ask to see one in the hospital since you don't have to pay OOP for those! Good luck!

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • Thanks for asking this. I took a BF class, but still feel a little overwhelmed with the idea. Some new places to look for tips and help when the time comes.
