CHL

Does anyone know of a good place to go get a CHL, also about how much is the class? DH has that on his wishlist, and I'm thinking about giving him cash for the class.

Thanks.

Re: CHL

  • Right now there is a Living Social deal to take the class for $65, which they have listed as 50% off.

In addition to the class, it is $140 to register with the state.

  • Depends on the side of town.  There in a place in League City called the Arms Room that has a shooting range and offers CHL classes.

  • I just got mine a few months ago and it was a little less than $300 total. I don't live in that area anymore but our class included the passport photos you have to send in with your paperwork and then after you do the app for the state you have to register and pay for digital fingerprinting which was about $12. If you have any questions, let me know!
  • I got mine at Carter's Country out in Spring. Loved the class and loved the instructor. Was quite the drive from SL though. If I recall correctly, we paid right around $275 and I didn't rent a gun. I believe it would've been about $25-35 more to rent a semi-automatic.

  • Spectre Firearms on 249 and Spring Cypress has classes. I got mine there, my husband used to work there. It included the photos and the finger prints and was about $150 I think.

After you take the class you have 6 months to file the paperwork. That comes in handy if you need to wait for $ reasons. Also start the paperwork process online, it makes that part go much faster and you can track it that way too.

  • I shoot regularly at Shooter's Station in Conroe and really like their instructors.  I took a private CHL course taught by a retired DPS officer, but if I hadn't had that opportunity I would have gone there.

My brother and my dad (both law enforcement) qualify periodically at Top Gun in Houston and recommend it.

If I'm remembering correctly, between the fees I paid to the state and the cost of the class it was about $300.  I already had my own gun.

You actually have a year to file your paperwork.

  • Awesome! Thank you guys for all of the great information. Now I just need to decide on a location.
