I'm getting stabby(update post!)

This is a vent, you don't need to respond if you don't want to. My other board I was on was shut down, so for now, I'm doing a semi work related vent.

My cheerleaders have been vanquished to practice on the stage. Fine. Yes, it has crappy lighting, and I wouldn't view it as the safest place, but it's considered "workable". I've been fairly flexible about this with my AD.

Last night (and last week) the stage was used for Christmas concert, so I had no place to practice. Never mind the fact that the basketball coach was using ONE of the four courts and we couldn't  use a 1/8 of the court.

I ran into my AD while I was trolling the school for space. We had a conversation that was basically the following

AD "Well, you know, there is some things booked in the auditorium, it happens."

Me: "Okay, well then why can't we share space with the basketball players for the TWO days we can't be in the auditorium?"

AD: That's out of the question, you'll just have to cancel practice.

Me: We have competition in a month, I can't cancel practice.

AD: Well, I don't know what to tell you.

Me: Well, I'm not happy. There are options here but nobody wants to compromise.

AD: I don't know what to tell you.

Me: Well, I don't know what to say either.

Today, he said "The auditorium will be available to use tomorrow"

Me: "Yes, I know that, but I have practice TONIGHT. Wait, it's at 6 so I can use the old gym right?

AD: "No, softball is in there with an open gym.

Me: but I'm IN SEASON, you said IN SEASON sports get gym time.

AD: You can't practice with softball.

Me: So I can't have practice tonight?

AD: No.

I'm pissed. I fire off an email to the cheerleading parents. They email me back outraged. I get a voicemail from saying that we can share the gym THIS TIME ONLY, then we are sent back to the auditorium and will never get gym space again. It's a "safety" issue to have us in there with softball and I will have to be very careful (ummm...I've been sharing the space with softball since September! WTF!)

This is turning into a school board issue. I don't see this ending well.

  • How is practicing on a stage less of a safety issue than practicing with the softball team? Just sayin. Stupid administrators!

  • Ugh...it's awful how all of the sports trump one another based on the way an AD thinks they are in importance.  Sorry you have to deal with this.
  • Do you have anything documented about the principal saying in season sports having preference on gym time?  If so, I would absolutely take it to the next higher up.  Also, unleash those parents on the administrators.

I do believe this whole situation is ridiculous.  Especially if the whole main gym isn't being utilized.

This.  In our school system it seems like it doesn't matter what the teachers say, but if parents start complaining things start changing fast.

That sucks that you are still going through this.  I remember you were having issues earlier with getting practice space.

  • Have you flat out asked him why he doesn't like cheerleaders? Or you? Some people just hate cheerleaders and thinks its a completely illegitimate waste of time. *eye roll*

  • I remember when you were sent to the stage. This does sound like a personal dislike towards you/your sport. I agree with the PPs that said to get the parents involved. I imagine there is a substantial amount of money that they put into each season and they wouldn't want their girls' chances in competition to be hurt because someone doesn't want you in the gym for BS reasons.

  • I think we are going to the school board next Monday.

    I Just searched my email and indeed, here is the email I received. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";}

Everyone please be aware that in season teams have first priority and if Volleyball or other in season activities happen to be in the gym when you are scheduled for open gym you have to work around them.

    Boom.

    Game. Blouses.

  • At least now you've got something to hold against them that they might actually take seriously. I really hope their attitudes change, because what you're dealing with is ridiculous.

  • Excellent.  And if they try to say that cheerleading isn't something that takes precedence over anything, then respond with 'I guess you won't be needing us for the rest of the basketball season, then.'  See how well that goes over.  It works in the band world, maybe it will work for you.
