Palin on Stevens verdict

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/10/27/stevens-verdict-palin-reacts/

(CNN) ? Sarah Palin said Monday Sen. Ted Stevens' guilty verdict "is a sad day for Alaska."

"This is a sad day for Alaska and a sad day for Senator Stevens and his family," she said on the tarmac at Richmond International Airport. "The verdict shines a light on the corrupting influence of the big oil service company up there in Alaska that was allowed to control too much of our state. And that control was part of the culture of corruption that I was elected to fight, and that fight must always move forward regardless of party affiliation or seniority or even past service.

"As Governor of the State of Alaska, I will carefully now monitor the situation and I'll take any appropriate action as needed. In the meantime, I ask the people of Alaska to join me in respecting the workings of our judicial system and I'm confident that Senator Stevens from this point on will do the right thing for the people of Alaska," she also said.

Palin did not respond when asked if she will vote for Sen. Stevens and promptly boarded the campaign plane.

Re: Palin on Stevens verdict

  • Come again?

How is this a sad day for Stevens? The man was a corrupt douche..he got what was coming to him.

  • Is this similar to how it was a sad day for Haggard when he got caught being a gay druggie?

  • Well I am sure that Stevens IS very sad for himself!

I have to say - Palin's take on this is akin to how LaLaLisa said she should have responded to wardrobegate. I wonder if she'll try to turn this into a positive (or rather, if she'll be successful).

  • Ditto on the sad day.  That's like saying, "it's a sad day that Jack Abramoff went to prison."  Nobody says that because it is not a sad day when criminals get convicted.

I'm just bouncing with glee.  No calls for his resignation? Or for Alaskans to support the non-felon on the ballot?

Real mavericky there, Sarah. Way to reform Washington!  Stay silent while a convicted felon tries to get relected.

    She's pathetic.

  • I also see her refusal to say whether she will still vote for Stevens as a pretty strong indication that she will still vote for Stevens.

  • SOrry, one more thing.

How is she so confident that he will do the right thing for the people of Alaska now? Becuase he has such a strong history of doing the right thing?

  • So much for taking on corruption in her own party, eh?

If by "right thing" she means, keep running for re-election, then she was right!

I think the fall out from this could be the October surprise.

    Stevens vows to fight conviction

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) just released a statement vowing to fight today's conviction. He also announced that he will not be stepping down from his Senate seat:

?I am obviously disappointed in the verdict but not surprised given the repeated instances of prosecutorial misconduct in this case. The prosecutors had to report themselves to the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility during the trial for ethical violations. Exculpatory evidence was hidden from my lawyers. A witness was kept from us and then sent back to Alaska. The Government lawyers allowed evidence to be introduced that they knew was false. I will fight this unjust verdict with every ounce of energy I have.

?I am innocent. This verdict is the result of the unconscionable manner in which the Justice Department lawyers conducted this trial. I ask that Alaskans and my Senate colleagues stand with me as I pursue my rights. I remain a candidate for the United States Senate. I will come home on Wednesday and ask for your vote.?

His Democratic challenger, Anchorage mayor Mark Begich, didn't try to score any political points from Stevens' situation in a statement released this evening.

?This past year has been a difficult time for Alaskans, but our people are strong and resilient and I believe that we will be able to move forward together to address the critical challenges that face Alaska," Begich said.

  • I think Obama can really use this to his advantage.  If MPC aren't willing to denounce a corrupt felon, how can they possibly fight corruption in Washington?

    Ditto!

  • Why should she care if someone else is corrupt when she participates in some of the very same activities she claimed she'd fight against? The whole pipeline thing was rigged from the very start under her administration. She hasn't been open with the press (unless you want to pay $$$$ for public records and I've yet to hear of another public official charging that much -- DH's office will give them to you for free unless you make a huge request and even then, it's not substatial).
