Really? (practice schedule update)

My parents asked me to set a meeting time with my AD to discuss the practice schedule.

He replied saying that "here are your practice times." no mention of meeting with cheer my parents.

I'm taking that he has decided to deny/ignore the parents request to meet with him.

Really?

I responded with a calm rational email outlining safety points. If he fails to respond I'm "releasing" my parents.

I had a mom say to me yesterday "You just let us know, we're standing down now...but if you need us to do anything...they (administration) won't know what hit them."

Re: Really? (practice schedule update)

  • Is your AD still having you practice on the stage? or did you get some gym time?

I'm glad your parents are standing behind you and are ready to stand next to or in front of you if necessary.

  • I got a three sentence email (before I sent my safety email) that basically said:

You can have the stage whenever you want in the evenings...if you want gym time you can have it before school.

  • I'm just boggled that he didn't address the parents wanting to meet with him.

If I did that, holy cow, I'd have a mess on my hands!

  • I still think he needs to meet with those parents, even if you/they are cool with gym time in the mornings and stage practice after school. The fact that he is basically blowing you/them off is incredibly unprofessional. Never mind that he's going against the school policy of in-season sports having priority.

Major props to you for staying calm and being the adult in this situation. Had it been me I think I would have punched this guy by now.

  • So I met with the AD again to go over once again why we weren't allowed gym space.

Simply put, we are a support team, other sports teams regardless of whether they are in season or out will get priority over us. Our high school association doesn't care about the cheerleaders apparently.

I pointed out the safety issues, and he basically told me that if the girls can't practice on the stage safely, maybe they shouldn't be doing those stunts at all.

I KNEW there was a possibility that he would bring that up. Stunting is a privilege, not a right. Especially after a girl a couple years ago cracked a vertebra stunting.

He did agree to move the random crap (2 pianos, random rusty lockers) and clean the area. We also talked about putting different lights on the stage as well as putting mirrors up for the girls.

It's a start I guess. I'll try to make it work. Doesn't make me super happy, but it will have to do.

  • I'm so frustrated for you. I wish the AD was more supportive. I am glad the parents are standing behind you though.

  • I would raise a holy stink that your extra curricular activity, that brings wins and publicity to your school through competition, that will go on your students' college applications, hell, that might even get a few college fvcking scholarships for some of your students, is not given the same consideration and respect as the regular sports.  Believe me, I perfectly understand how you feel about this and it's bullsh!t.

It's good that they're going to do more to make your current practice space better, but the dismissiveness is more than I would be able to deal with.  Will they say that  cheerleading practice takes precedence over anything that needs to be rehearsed on the stage because it's an athletic practice and more important than anything drama-related?  Ask them that question.

Have your parents write very angry letters to the school board about how disappointed they are that the squad is being disrespected so much.  I think it's ridiculous that before a freaking COMPETITION, you can't even get into the gym to practice in a way more comparable to the competition environment.

Shoot, give me the address of the school board, I'll write a letter for you!
