F/U on SIL

For those who read my last post about SIL possibly being pregnant... Shes pregnant. She has decided to marry the guy and keep the baby and most likely drop out of high school. MIL is sooo excited too.

  • How much longer until she finished HS? Didn't you say she's 17? Shouldn't she be a senior? If she just found out, she's probably due in August so she could definitely finish this year.

I'm all for having the baby and I'm not even totally opposed to the getting married, but dropping out of school is a hugely poor decision.

  • Ugh.  Is there any way your husband can try to convince her to at least wait on the marriage?  Marriage doesn't solve problems or make mediocre/bad situations better.

  • I would talk to her about staying in school. She has only a few months left!

  • I agree with Meltoine. Dropping out isn't the only option. Schooling is important. Having a baby doesn't mean she has to drop everything.

She stopped going to school months ago, It was her Junior year. I think adoption would be the smartest thing but DH and I already know that's not going to happen. She thinks this is going to be like playing house.

Seriously. I had a cousin who got married after a surprise baby. They even waited until the baby was a year old to have the wedding and later on had another child and their marriage still didn't last. There were signs prior to the marriage that showed it was a bad idea.

  • Does her district have any programs for teen parents?  I know the one I teach in bends over backwards to keep them in school, and we even have a special campus/daycare where teen moms and dads take academic and parenting classes every day.  Even if she's dropped out a campus like that might take her.

  • I missed the OP, but this is just so bad all the way around.  She'll have only half her high school education, a child, and likely a divorce before she can legally drink.

If her school/county don't have a teen mom program, what about online programs?  Dumbasses like on teen mom can't manage to get a ged after a couple years, but it really can't be that hard.

  • This post makes me sad.  Not because of a baby coming into the world but because of the all around irresponsibilty.  Your MIL should be kicked.

We have a couple of alternative schools that most of the teen moms and trouble makers go. SIL went her sophomore year because she was getting kicked out for missing to many days of school (her mom kept her home or pulled her out so she would have someone to hang out with). She could do that but would have to squeeze 2 years into less than 9 months. However, at the rate shes going she may not go back at all.

I agree but she also needs some serious psychiatric medication.

Most reasonably smart kids can actually do this if they're motivated enough.  I really hope for everyone's sake she decides to get her diploma.
