Can a scooter count as carry-on luggage?

Okay, seasoned travellers- I am holding out the unrealistic hope that a scooter is treated like a stroller by airlines, but I can think of several reasons this wouldn't be the case. So, does anyone know? Is my only option to pack it in a box and check it at the airport?

DD loves her scooter. It must come with us on the move. It was hard enough to find one she liked when we shopped for it here, I can't subject myself to that process again.

  • Scooter like this?

Don't they fold down to practically nothing?  If so, I'd put it in a suitcase.  Something so thin is bound to get lost, even if it's gate checked.

  • More or less, wise_rita. The base is a little thicker, for the pre-school set. I think it would fit in the front closet of the airplane, if the flight attendants were kind enough to allow it. But, I am not expecting they will say yes.

  • I would call the airline and check.   I'm honestly not sure, though I suspect the answer will be "no", but it's worth asking the question.

Is the only way to keep the scooter to bring it with you on the plane?  Do you have other household goods (furniture, etc) being shipped?  Could you include the scooter in that shipment?  If not, could you possibly put it in a box and mail it to yourself on the other end (this could be cheaper than buying another checked bag)?   Or possibly donate this one to a charity shop and buy a new one when you get settled?

  • Does it fold up small enough to fit into a carry-on rolling bag? If it doesn't fold-up, can it easily enough be taken apart and put in a suitcase? I hope you can figure out how to get it there with you on the plane. Sounds like your DD really enjoys her scooter!
