Tell me about Cricut, Silhouette, etc
I know NOTHING about this stuff. Is there a simple explanation of the differences, and what they can do? There seems to be a zillion different machines.
If I was to expand my horizons, which would I want?

Re: Tell me about Cricut, Silhouette, etc
The main difference is that with Cricut, you have to use carts- physical objects you have to go out and buy- to cut shapes. You use the machine to lay out and shapes.
With a Silhouette, your shapes are stored in your library on software. You need a computer to operate the software that lays out and sizes your shapes. You plug the machine into the computer and go.
The main advantage of a Cricut used to be the 12 x 12 cuts- but Silhouette recently released the Cameo, which can cut 12 x 12. The Silhouette SD (which is the machine I have) has a cutting area of 8 1/2 x 11.

Thanks!
So, they are different products? Different companies/manufacturers?
What kids of things can you do with these things? Examples?

Yep- Provo Craft makes the Cricut and Silhouette America makes the Silhouette.
They're completely different products, but the same kind of thing- papercrafting machines.
I use my Silhouette for applique work on quilts (with interfacing) and papercrafting. I know people use these machines for all sorts of crafts- if you google "cricut craft tutorials" or "silhouette craft tutorials" you'll get a ton of ideas.
