I know the Silhouette is popular on here, but I got my Cricut for Christmas last year as a total surprise, so I can't complain
I'm also sad I didn't get on the bandwagon for the SCAL/etc sooner, I just didn't know anything about all this when I got it.
Anyway, just looking at what my options are with the Cricut, I see that there are Gypsy and Design Studio. Anyone have either of these? I have a MAC, which I know isn't compatible with the Design Studio, but I could just buy the software (I think like $15?) to run my computer in a Windows format. DS seems to be a lot cheaper and I imagine easier to use since it's on the computer, but maybe there is an advantage to the Gypsy that I don't see? thanks!
ETA: This made me laugh - reading the FAQ about DS and the USB cord that goes with it: the Cricut USB cable is longer than the average USB cable (10 feet) and significantly cuter. lol
Re: Anyone have the Cricut Design Studio or Gypsy?
I have Design Studio and LOVE it! Everyone at crops comes over to check it out. Why I like it:
1. I like that it runs on my laptop so I can really see what I'm cutitng. I couldn't do anything with the tiny screen on the Gypsy.
2. I like the way I can use other people's cartridges on it.
3. I got it cheap online, around $35. Gypsy's are more expensive.
4. I like that I can search for images on it (I would think you could do that on the Gypsy as well) and if I find what I want, I'll just ask around to see if someone has that cartridge for me to borrow.
5. It has a learning curve, just like anything else, but once you read the instructions and learn it, it's pretty easy.
6. You don't have to carry around the cartridge booklets anymore, just the cartridge and overlay.
The biggest thing to me is the the cutting mat is so large and easy to see on the laptop monitor. That makes it so much easier.

thank you for the info! a lot of that was kind of what I was wondering, so that definitely seems better to me than the Gypsy.

I freaking LOVE my Design Studio! You have no idea. The last crop I was at, a few women had a Gypsy and neither of them used it because it wasn't user friendly (their words) and the screen was too small. So they were checking out my Deisgn Studio.
The reason I'm not planning on using Craft Room is because you have to be online, and I probably 99% of my scrapbooking at crops and retreats, and some of them don't have wi-fi.
I'm guessing you have a PC? That's the one thing that I'm still trying to decide. I have a Mac right now. I've heard you can run a Mac in windows mode, but then I guess some people worry about that messing with things. Alternatively, I guess I could wait and see if they come out with a version for Mac (which is SO dumb that they don't already) :-/ They do say in their FAQ that they are considering it because they've heard there is interest in it, maybe I'll just have to write in too!
