Anyone have Gingher scissors?

I have been thinking about buying a pair for my Mom. She is a quilter who occasionally dabbles in other sewing projects. She mostly uses her rotary cutter. Will she still really uses these? Are they really that wonderful? What size do you recommend? Any other thoughts?

Re: Anyone have Gingher scissors?

  • The only Gingher scissors that I have is a small pair (maybe 4") with leopard print handles. I find them quite useful.

I am not a fan of the full size, because I don't find them comfortable to use.  They are nice shears (my business partner has some that she has had for over 30 years), but they make my hand sore.

  • I only have the shears- I use them occasionally and they are quality.

  • Depends on age of the shears 5 or 6 years ago, their steel went way down hill. They only used german steel before then. It keeps a a sharp edge and last for ever. Also its lighter in hand. Lately I have been much happier with Mundials. They are light weight, keep a nice edge, sharpen up well, and are less $$$.

  • Funny story about Ginghers.  My mom has the full size shears (as well as many smaller ones) many many years ago, we had a dog who was pregnant, and my oldest brother (he was probably 18 or 19 at the time) was the only one home when the dog went into labor, so my brother helped deliver her puppies, well he used my moms good ginghers to cut open the sacks.  When we all came home and saw all the puppies, and after all the oohs and ahhs, my mom screams "you used my good scissors!!"

Hm, so it's not just me. I cut both right-handed even though I'm a lefty. H bought me a left-handed pair of Ginghers for my birthday a couple years ago so I've been practicing with them. They make my hand sore right around my the knuckle in my thumb, and I thought it might be just because I'm still a little awkward about it.
