When my BIL was over yesterday he saw Evan's sippy cups out on the drying rack in the kitchen and asked why we have so many. I answered that he uses 4 a day and we don't want to was dishes every other day just for cups. He then asked why we wash the cups after every use. I was beside myself and totally grossed out, so I just said, "because they are dirty."So he then asked if I wash my coffee cup after each time I use it. I told him I don't drink coffee, but if I did, yes, I would wash it.
Do you ever NOT wash a cup after using it? Do does it matter what was in the cup (I.e. coffee, juice, water) for you to wash it?

Re: Poll - washing glasses/cups
The only thing we put in sippy cups these days is water, so no, those don't get washed every time T gets a drink of water during the day. If she doesn't finish her glass of milk with her meal I may stick it back in the fridge for later, but if it's empty, it gets washed.
I do know for a fact that rrr does not wash his office coffee cup every day. I don't even know that it gets rinsed. He did bring it home once and it was NASTY, but his excuse is he only drinks coffee black, so there's no cream or anything to go bad. I just told him I was glad no one else had to drink out of it, and I saw a news piece years ago about exactly such coffee cups, but it doesn't bother him. I think its a guy thing.
If water is in the sippy I rinse it. It will go in the dishwasher at the end of the day.
If it's milk, I put it back in the fridge if they didn't finish it. If finished it gets rinsed and put in dishwasher.
Juice is the same as milk. I only go through 1 maybe 2 sippies a day depending on what they are drinking.
If I finish a cup of water and want another, I don't get a new glass/cup, especially if it's right away or only an hour or so.
If I finish a cup of coffee then immediately get another, I don't wash the mug or get a new one but if it's been several hours, I get a new mug.
Good questions. This is not immediately after each use. Evan goes to daycare, so he gets a sippy cup with breakfast that gets washed, then a milk and a juice go to school, and then a sippy cup with dinner.
If finish a drink and immediately want more, I don't get a new cup. But I do wash it or put it in the dishwasher when I am finished. Then a few hours later if I want another drink I get a new glass.
BIL wanted to know why we couldn't just use one cup all day.
P.S. My SIL and BIL have a kitchen so filthy DH and I refuse to eat or drink at their house.

DD isn't really into sippy cups yet - but I usually have a water cup around the house for myself. I drink out of it all day, and don't wash it every time I fill it up.
I also have a cup in the bathroom for water. That one only gets replaced every few days or so. Call me gross, but I rarely get sick and I'm super hydrated - so I think it works out ok for me.
This and what Red_Dahlia said. I loathe a ton of cups in the sink, especially when there are only 2 of us that drink from regular cups. I have a "water" cup that I drink out of in the kitchen and will wash it every few days, as long as I am only drinking water out of it.
I'd rather just quickly wash a cup in the sink than keep getting new ones out.

I use one cup a day for myself. If I drank OJ or milk and it sat out afterwards, I'd wash it. But for water/coke/tea... no way. It's my cup, my germs, and I just don't see it as being any worse for me right now than if I had gotten a refill 2 hours ago.
So we do the same for the kids. We stick it back in the fridge and they get it again later.
And the kids take 1 sippy to daycare. After they finish their milk or juice, they rinse it and put water in it. Maybe they wash it, but there's definitely only one cup there at a time.
IL's do this. It creeps me out. They are very veery clean but will use the same glass all day repeatedly. I say just get a new one.
We don't wash every time. If it's just water there's no need for us to wash it. I've been known to use a same glass for a few days. DD does too, but if there's milk in it we rinse/wash.
If I have tea or coffee I rinse it out after every use, but I don't necessarily wash it every time.
I will use the same glass all day... doesn't really matter hat I'm drinking, I just rinse if it's not water. I realize some people's "rinse" definition is different than others. By "rinse" I mean rinse out the inside, and clean off any gunk that's gotten on the glass (lipstick, food, whatever).
DH, on the other hand, will sometimes pick up my glass while I'm still using it, rinse it, and put it in the dishwasher. Then I'll come back from the bathroom, or another room and wonder where my drink went.
This is especially a problem right after dinner. Sometimes I'm still working on my drink. On occasion he'll ask, and I feel like I'm being pressured to chug my drink...lol.
He's the kind of person who wold go through 4 sippy cups a day. I'm not.

C uses one cup for water daily - I just refill it and wash it at night. I will wash the milk cup after each meal, or if I'm super lazy I'll toss it in the dishwasher and get another one.
I use my Tervis cup for water during the day and I don't wash it until the end of the day. I just keep refilling it.
DS gets milk in the morning when he gets up. He never drinks it all so I put it back in the fridge. He's in daycare the rest of the day. He'll get the same cup, refilled with milk, for dinner/bedtime. I'll then put that cup back in the fridge and re-use it the next day too so he may use 1 cup for 2 days, as long as it hasnt sat out.
I'll do the same with a juice cup.
