Starlet... How DR?

Re: Starlet... How DR?

  • ... and clearly I can not form a complete sentence today.  How was DR?

  • The DR was beautiful!  We stayed at Excellence Punta Cana and the resort was gorgeous!  It was really big, but our room was close to the pool and restaurants (but not right next to anything so we didn't get woken up).  All the restaurants were really nice and you didn't need a reservation for any, but the food never really wowed me.  Drinks were strong and they definitely kept them coming!  Plus they had all the liquor you would see in the states, so that was nice.  According to my husband, the one beer they had wasn't very good.

The pool was my favorite part--it was huge and wrapped around the resort.  And it wasn't hard to find a place to lay out.

The beach was huge and gorgeous.  There was always a red flag though, meaning the surf was rough.  A guy actually died our 2nd day there.  I watched them give him CPR for like 10 minutes.  Supposedly he had a heart attack and then drowned...I just know that he was out there surfing.  It was sad.

There were lots of weddings and I bet the pictures were phenomenal.

Our room was huge and really nice.  We were on the top floor so we had a vaulted ceiling.

The whole resort was reallllly clean and everyone was really nice and helpful.  But the people didn't really have the personality of the people in Jamaica.  It was much more laid back in Jamaica and the people were so fun!

The only negative was the water.  You could only drink bottled water and we used bottled water to brush our teeth with too.  Even still, we both had stomach issues and so did a lot of the other people I talked to at the resort.  Not fun.  Oh, and I blew the breakers every time I dried my hair...DH had to stand by the box and flip the switch every few minutes!

I would recommend the place though.  It was big, but not huge so you didn't feel lost.  It was super clean and they really took care of you.  There was always stuff going on that you could take part in, but it was quiet enough during the day that you could relax and not be interrupted.

Oh, and channel 96 was all porn, all the time.

  • One last thing: Don't fly US Air!

I went to check in online the day before we flew out and I couldn't, so I called the airline and they said we had canceled our flight in October!  Which we definitely didn't! I spent an hour on the phone with them and got absolutely no where...they said the flights were booked and there was nothing they could do.  DH called them, spent 3 hours on the phone and finally got us back on our original flights.  It was sooo stressful!  I was bawling at work while we tried to sort it out.  We still don't know why they had that in their system.  Someone clearly f*ed up.

Then on the way home, we got stuck on the plane in the DR for 4 hours!  It was miserable!  Loud noises while they worked to fix something, kept restarting the plane so it went from freezing cold in the A/C to hot and muggy.  And then at 9:30 p.m., they tell us we can't leave.  We have to get off the plane, go back through customs, wait for our baggage, load it onto buses, drive 45 minutes to a resort (Parradissus--beautiful but really huge!), wait for rooms to be ready and we finally went to bed at 12:30.  We had to be back in the lobby at 8 to go back to the airport.

We got home 24 hours later than scheduled.  And all we've gotten is a $50 voucher.  I have an email in and am waiting to hear back...I'm determined to get the trip comped because of that whole "flight was canceled" debacle.

  • That does sound amazing!  Well other than the stomach issues.  We had that problem in Mexico and we only drank bottled water the whole time too.  Fun times.

How scary and sad about the surfer.

We are still trying to decide where we want to go this year.  We moved our vacation up so we'll be going the first week of May.  I fell in love with Jamaica when we went last year so I'd really like to go back.  We stayed in Montego Bay, but I think I'd like to try another area this time.

When you went to Jamaica where did you stay?  All of the vacation packages I've found fly into Montego Bay, then you take a long bus ride to Negril or Ocho Rios.

You need to post some pics so we all can see!

  • Wow!  Clearly someone really messed up.  I'm glad you were able to get on your original flight though.

I seriously would have cried sitting on the plane for 4 hours!  That's just inexcusable!

My SIL had a bad experience with them a few months ago too.  They were trying to make a connecting flight and they had closed the doors already.  The airline wouldn't let them or like 6 other couples on the flight.  I could understand if they were late, but they closed the doors early.

I hope you're able to get some money back on your trip because that's just ridiculous!

We stayed at Breezes Rio Bueno, which was right near Ochos Rios.  That was beautiful and we would've gone back but it closed.  Breezes has another resort in Runaway Bay that my friends have been to and they loved it!  We might try that next time.

What resorts/locations are you guys thinking of for your trip?  Have you narrowed it down at all or are you still searching?

  • Sounds like a great time.. even with the couple issues. I am desperate to go on vacation.
  • Sounds like overall you had a good time.  Good luck with US Air.  I refuse to fly with them because it took them over a year to refund a flight for me that they didn't let me board because of their mistake and the refund was travel vouchers that expired really soon after they issued them.  Definitely a crappy company to deal with.
  • Other than US air and the illness it sounds like a great trip!

When we were in Bali we drank only bottled water also, what actually got us sick was the hotel/resort food, that may have been what got you sick also. All my traveler friends say to only eat from locals/street vendors when abroad because the hotels rely on frozen foods and they aren't using fresh foods like the locals.

  • We are still searching.  I want to keep it around 3k for the week.  I've heard that the beaches are really nice in Negril.  I'm just hesitant to ride on the bus that long to get there.  We stayed at RIU in Montego Bay and it was really nice.  I liked that it was a smaller resort and you could get around easily.  When we went to Mexico we had to wait on golf carts just to get to the other end of the resort.  I just really want a nice beach and food that doesn't make me sick.  :)

  • That sounds like a good trip overall. Can't wait to see your pics!

D&J - I loved Sandals Dunns River. I know I've said it here before, but we had a blast. That was as close to a perfect vacation as we could possibly get. It was awesome.

3k for a week will go pretty far in Jamaica.  When we did Jamaica, it was 3k for 10 days.  My friends just went to Couples (I think Negril, but not positive) and they loved it!

  • Thanks Starlet and Karebear... I'll have to research those.
