BM question

Hi all,

Gwen has been having some issues with pooing.  Tell me if this sounds normal:

For about 3 weeks now, she has had a once a week time where she doesn't go for about 2 days (she is normally a 3-4 a day type of gal).  Then, she will explode with poo.  It has looked pretty normal (mustard seedy, yellow, good consistency) until this last weekend.

On Saturday, she poo'd 3 times and Sunday 2.  This was after not pooing since Thursday.  Both were pretty mucusy, and runny.  Yesterdays both blew out.  She has always had pretty explosive poo, with straining.  Since starting to not go for a while, she has been having pretty smelly gas too.  No mustard seeds were in her poo last week (I cut out dairy) and when I ate some dairy Sat and Sun, she had a few mustard seeds in those.  I had read that they were milk proteins that don't break down, so that made sense to me.  But, I read that if a baby under 3 months has mucusy, loose stools, to call the doctor.  I did, and explained that she is still wetting normally and doesn't have any other symptoms, and they thought that was okay.  Last night she also vomited (I think I overfed her, she had about 5 tablespoons worth, and hasn't spit up since).

So..... mucusy poo- is this okay?  Especially if she hasn't gone in a few days?  I have looked up pics online, and it looks mucusy, but I don't think watery, just very loose.

Re: BM question

  • If you cut out dairy due to a concern about dairy intolerance/allergy then having some dairy on Saturday and Sunday you could be looking at mucousy poops for another two weeks.  Collin goes at almost every diaper change for two days if I get some dairy and the mucous takes at least a week to clear out again.  About half of those end up being blow-outs.  He also does a lot more spitting up when I get dairy.

There is also a nasty stomach bug going around that causes diarrhea and vomiting so if you cut out dairy for something other than her you will want to keep an eye on her.

  • Is she BF? Gemma is EBF and this sounds exactly like what we experience. I've always heard that it's normal for BF babies to go several days without pooping and then have several poops in one day. As long as she's also having wet diapers I wouldn't worry ( I don't at least).

  • I think that foremilk-hindmilk imbalance can also present in that way, but I could be totally off.  You could try googling it, and seeing if it describes your situation at all.  It may be something to think about before cutting things out of your diet.

  • From what I remember, I think mucousy poop means she may have some milk protien intolerance issues. G had alot of mucousy poop (along with other issues-colicky, terrible diaper rash, etc) that helped us determine she had MPI.

I don't know if that helps at all, or if you're worried she has a MPI. But if it bothers her, I would try to stay away from dairy if ya can. (Does that even help at all?!?)
