PCSing with a Guinea Pig?
My husband and I are PCSing to Germany in April. We have a pet guinea pig that we have grown somewhat attached to and would like to move her over there with us so I was wondering if anyone has or knows anyone who has PCSed overseas with a guinea pig. If we can bring her as a carry-on we would totally do it, but we really don't want to check her as cargo because it's such a long flight! Any help/advice would be great! Thanks!
Re: PCSing with a Guinea Pig?
Hi there. I have a piggy, but I've only moved CONUS with him, never had him on an airplane before. I've read that piggies are very popular pets in Germany because a lot of people don't have space for a dog or cat. So hopefully, that part won't present any issues.
As far as transportation issues, I absolutely understand not wanting her in the undercarriage. No animal should ever go in the undercarriage, especially on a transcontinental flight. Too dangerous! Start looking into airline policies now. You may have to speak with someone in person and get a letter written to bring with you.
I've read about airlines allowing dogs and rabbits, but disallowing guinea pigs in the cabin on the grounds that they're a dirty nasty rodent that could escape in the cabin (for real?! My piggy is the perfect, most docile travel companion I ever met). I would also look into the services that people use to transport dogs long distance. It may not be cheap, though.
Sorry I wasn't much help, but I wish you the best with your piggy!
Thank you all so much! I've read up on a few airline policies and it seems as though most of them don't allow piggys in the cabin. Which is weird but, whatever! We might see if we can pull a few strings and maybe get someone to bend the rules a little.
Thanks again for all the advice!
Not to Germany :-) Just make sure your flight is direct from the US to Germany, if you have a layover in the UK you are subject to their quarantine laws, which I beleive is 6 months, and that is even if you just stop and do not even get off the plane.
OP- we are PCSing to Germany soon and I have done a ton of research on how to get my dogs there. I have no idea if the rules are the same as Guinea Pigs, but we can carry on our smallest dog and put her under the seat in front of us. Airlines have a lot of info on their websites, Delta and American seem to be the best for pets (at least that I have found).
