In-Laws Present Stumper

I'm down to my last gift to-be-bought & it's for my in-laws.  These people have everything.  My FIL is a high up at Underwriters Laboratories...this guy bought a fully loaded SUV a few years ago with his bonus.  They like to travel a lot (mostly cruises) & they love wine.  Last year we got them each a bottle of wine, which I guess I could do again, but I sort of wanted to change it up.  I asked the hubby about getting a gift card for them of some sort to their favorite restaurant or something, and he said that they don't have a favorite.  I feel sort of silly spending $50 on a couple who can just go out and buy whatever they want whenever, but I know that it's the thought that counts, etc.  Any ideas as to what to get?

Re: In-Laws Present Stumper

  • OMG I have the exact same problem with my in-laws. If they want something they generally have it, so I feel like any present I get them is stupid. I usually just make them something homemade because it shows more thought than adding to the stack of stuff that they already have and the restaurants they can afford to go to on their own. For FIL (he's diabetic) I made him baggies of SF nuts and SF macaroons (his fave). The nuts are usually a spicy coated almond, honey and cayenne almonds, roasted walnuts with cinnamon, etc. For MIL I always change it up. One time I crocheted a super soft throw for the sunroom in their beach house, we gave them a canvas print of our wedding photo one year, I've made her paintings for their dining room, etc. They always seem to like them and she uses the stuff I've given her all the time. It helps that she's not into decorating so when they got their beach house she had me help them with color schemes, etc so I knew what she needed and where it could go.
  • I'm 95% sure we're getting our in-laws a Keurig.  But if your ILs already have everything, they probably have that or something way fancier.

I say go with what works, if they like wine, get them wine.  It surely won't go to waste.

  • we love using the " _______ of the month club" from amazingclubs.com

We've gotten wine of the month for my ILs, Olive Oil of the Month for my mother (which comes with a bottle of olive oil and breadsticks), and cigar of the month club for my father.

This year we got my parents the "dinner of the month" club which comes with a pasta, sauce, adn some other stuff...

you can pick 3 months to 12 months, and there is an option to have it sent every other month (so, you can do 3 months with every other month, so it feels like it lasts longer).

My parents loved it so much last year that my mother ordered the beer of the month club for my father this year!

  • We got DH's parents a GC last year to a really nice restaurant in town. They rarely indulge in dining out, so we knew they'd love it. This year, we got FIL some new tools, and MIL a new start of a Christmas collection. She loves collecting things, from snowglobes to Christmas Village pieces...hopefully she doesn't mind that we're starting a new collection for her!
