So, a little preface: I have been irked somewhat each year by the excessive amounts of leftovers produced at my ILs holiday meals. My MIL will make five turkeys and/or hams for 20 people to eat. Ridiculous. And I'll be frank - most of these people are not exactly starving, if you get my drift.
So I had suggested to my ILs this last Saturday that maybe we could find out if any local shelters will accept those homemade leftovers, since there are undoubtedly people in way more dire circumstances than any of us who could use a hot meal - especially on the holidays.
So, here's the PSA: I spoke to a rep in the Denver Rescue Mission's kitchen (the downtown location), and he said they will accept any food they can get - perishable or nonperishable.
Woot! My plan is to take our leftover portion from Sunday's meal and tool down there to drop it off. And I really encourage anyone else to do the same if you are able to and have the means.
ETA: Even if for whatever reason they turn your homemade food donations away, there are always tons of people waiting in the outdoors for the shelter to open, and they can hardly regulate if you give your food to any of them. Just an FYI - you won't likely make the trip in vain no matter what.
