NYE - what to serve?

I have plans to go out to dinner with two of my friends and their husbands. We'll be having a 4 course dinner that starts at 7pm.  After dinner, we're headed back to my apartment to hang out and play board games.

I've got champagne and sparkling cider, but what should I serve for food?

I don't want to go crazy because I'm sure we'll be full after dinner, but I also want to make sure I have something in case people are hungry later on in the evening.

Whatever I serve it needs to easy because I have guests staying with me all week and I'm working.

Any ideas?

I was thinking chocolate covered strawberries or picking up a cheesecake.

What do you think?

Re: NYE - what to serve?

  • I may be in the serious minority but I hate choc. covered strawberries. Logistically they suck. They're never one bite size and when you bite into the hard chocolate shell inevitably pieces will drop and it kinda falls apart before you get the whole thing in your mouth.

I'd probably put out some cheese, seasoned (spiced or sweet) nuts, cut up fruit and gourmet crackers. The cheesecake could be a great option but I'd try to get bite size options as after a huge meal I might pass on a full piece of cheesecake. Other sweets options would be pieces of high quality chocolate (you could do really interesting stuff like sea salt caramels, dark chocolate with chili flakes, white chocolate with lavender, etc.)

All of this can be picked up from a gourmet food store so there's almost no prep work.

  • I'd have a salty crunchy snack of some sort- I like to mix some melted butter, paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, salt, and pepper then toss in some honey roasted nuts.  Then maybe a cheese ball and crackers, some veggies (simple carrots and celery and cucumber), and petit fours.
  • I'm a big fan of strawberries and champagne and choco-covered strawberries.  If not choc-covered, I would have plain berries for people to put in their glasses.  It's a nice, festive touch

Like PP mentioned, I think small desserts (so you don't have to worry about cutting and plating a cheesecake) would be easy.

I also like the idea of a cheese tray with crackers, nuts and fruit.  That's light and simple.  And again - no cutting or plating.  Just have some small plates and cocktail napkins on hand.

Are you considering having beverages other than champagne and cider?  Alcoholic and non.  Beer, wine, coffee, tea, water.

  • Ok, I think I'll do one dessert and then a cheese platter (with nuts, fruit, crackers).

I have a bottle of wine on hand, but half of us won't be drinking at all and the other half aren't big drinkers to begin with, so I think I should be set with alcohol.  I always have tea, juice and water on hand.

    Thanks girls.
