Recommend a non-Mac laptop?

I've had great luck with my HP.  I've had it for 6 years and it's running like a champ.  We cashed in the warranty on it to have it basically refurbished 2 years ago, and it was totally worth the extra money spent.  I can't recommend the model because it's older, but HP is my go-to computer brand.  Everyone I know that's had a Dell has problems with it.  We have them for work too, and they're junk.  I know a lot of people with the Sony Vaio (sp?) and they all really like it, but they can be pricey.

I have had a Dell Inspirion for 2  years and have never had a problem with it. I like it.

My last laptop was an HP.  The motherboard went out 2 years ago, and I had it replaced with the warranty (it was only a year old at the time.)  It has since bluescreened on me. 

So, I don't really want an HP given that track record, though I was happy with it when it was working.  Maybe I'll give them another try. 

I refuse to buy Dell.

Maybe a Sony Vaio is the way to go.  Unless by pricey you mean the same cost as a Mac.  Hmmm...

The H buys all Dell for work. He refuses to get HP. I think computers are like everything else: everyone has had some type of negative experience with different brands. 

The H got me a Lenovo ThinkPad for Christmas. I like to play games and it's a gaming machine. I'm really happy with it so far!

Yes, it would be for school (e-books, writing papers, etc), internet browsing/shopping, and photo uploading/minor editing.

My workplace only buys Dell too. 

My issue with Dell is not the computer, it's the customer service.  Since your H, and my work, have IT teams, I can see why CS is not an issue.  But if I have a problem with a computer and need help, I want somewhere to go to get it.  I don't have that with Dell.

This is exactly what I've always used my 'puter for.  Nothing fancy.
