Dog Rescue Ladies

Some of you may remember but a couple years ago some ladies helped me with finding a good rescue to take my SIL's beagle that was a "no kill" rescue.

Well fast forward 2 years and I am again in a position to need help finding one...guess I either have "dog lover" or "sucker" written across my forehead because DH's cousin contacted us last week via Facebook and asked if we'd (insert beg) take her 8 year old Siberian Husky because it just had too much energy and she couldn't handle him anymore/didn't have the time to deal with him.

Reluctantly we agreed, and on Friday we drove out to WI to get him.  When we picked him up he stunk to high heaven, and was 2 months over due on his shots.  We took him to the vet Saturday morning and got that taken care of, and then to a dog wash and he's all sparkly now.  Unfortunately we knew it wasn't going to be permanent, we took him in in hopes of finding him a better home then the "pound" where he would have most likely been euthanized due to breed and age.

Please help me!!  I've emailed MUSHR and haven't heard anything from them.  As of right now I'd say he needs a home with a strong male figure because he seems to bond with them better.  I'm about 85% certain he was beaten too because he's got extreme face/head sensitivity and he's got separation anxiety, does not like to be left alone at.all!

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh.  This REALLLLLLY pisses me off.  Hello person - it's a HUSKY.  What did you expect???

    Ok, sorry.  Rant over.

We adopted Renzo from Homeward Bound.  It might be worth calling or emailing them.

  • Grrrr. I really hope these people didn't have this dog for 8 years, only to decide now that he has too much energy. Like Kiz said ... I don't know what they were expecting with a Husky. If they did any research at all they would have known what to expect as far as energy level.

Do you know where they got the dog from? Like, was it adopted from a shelter or rescue? If so, that shelter/rescue will likely take it back.

If that doesn't work, Animal Ark, Secondhand Hounds, or Pet Haven are options in addition to Homeward Bound. Our dog is an Animal Ark alum ... they're located in Hastings and are no kill.

  • I asked my friend who just adopted a husky and she said Adopt A Husky or Secondhand Hound. Keep us posted:)

I used to volunteer with Homeward Bound at their adoption events and they have someone there who is excellent with strong Alpha dogs that bond with males (Ironically, she's female) The things Linzy did with a malamute named Kuna were amazing. I'd give them a call.

  • Ok so I've heard from MUSHR and looked into Last Hope but it says on their website specifically that they don't want any dog with separation anxiety, so not sure that they'd take him.

I spent an hour and a half with him yesterday at the vet because our vet owns two huskies and she walked me through about every inch of their body, and mannerism's and vocalizations and then she introduced him to her one husky while she talked to me with her Alpha female and walked through some of the vocalizations and other things to look at with Huskies.  After that she took the female out to meet him and immediately she launched at our husky and our husky didn't even flinch.  So we're not concerned about any sort of aggression at this point (we just didn't know alot about huskies so I wasn't familiar with their vocalizations and that growls sometimes mean play with me).

He is very head/face sensitive because we think he was hit pretty bad, and anytime we put a hand up he flinches and coils back in fear so she gave us some therapy techniques to work on that with him.

He's a good dog, just barks a.lot.  (which is par for the course in our house with shelties).

As far as the old owner (family member)...I really want to hit her, why people get dogs specifically working breed dogs and just ignore them and crate them in a kennel all day everyday is beyond me.  He ONLY has this much energy because he's been pent up for 8 years of his life.  He walks on leash awesome, doesn't pull at all, I just don't see where she thought he had too much energy!

He is a strong independent type and that's just been the only thing we've had to work on, that NO means NO.

  • I'm not sure if they accept surrenders, but Pet Project Rescue, MNPAWS.org, Underdog Rescue and AllDogMN.org are rescues we have worked with in our (very long) process of adopting a rescue dog. All of them have been great to work with, and they are also smaller rescues and in our experience give more personal attention to both the dogs and adoptive families.

It sounds like you are doing a great job so far!!!   Yes

I will say from experience that sometimes people convince themselves they can handle a certain breed (ahem....see the GSP in my sig...........).  In our case it has worked out beautifully (after a rocky start).  But sometimes it doesn't.  :-(  So having been through our experience with Renzo I can see how someone can get in over their heads.  BUT, having been through it all it baffles me when people seem to put ZERO thought into what they are getting in to.  I would wager a guess that maybe 10% of the population is equipped to handle a breed like a husky vs. 90% of the population could handle a lab.  All that said, I hope your family member has learned a very valuable lesson.

  • I used to be a huge Animal Ark fan, but after I heard about some awful things about what they do with their finances I no longer support them or donate money.

I'm a huge fan of Pet Haven, Rescued Pets Are Wonderful (RPAW) and Rescued Tails. MUSHR is a great group too. I have 2 cats from Pet Haven, 1 cat from Animal Ark/Pleading Paws, and my dog from RPAW.

Best of luck to you and your situation.
