What age to bring kids to Disney

What is everyone's thoughts on this? Does it change if the kid never watches tv and has no clue who the characters are?

Really want to go on a family vacation. Not sure where, just relaxing family fun, eating out, etc. The benefit of Disney is that MIL and FIL have a timeshare there and they would most likely come and be babysitters!

But also i am thinking that she is too young for a real trip and would be more stress than needed.

Would be nice to go somewhere with just DH, but then I'd have to pump, and have never left Evie overnight..

We got a nice christmas bonus, and want to put part of it towards a real vacation since it has been forever since we have been on one.

Re: What age to bring kids to Disney

  • I think the key is just going somewhere where it will be relaxing for you all.  Obviously going w/ Evie will be different b/c you have naps and things to consider.  I know there are resorts in the Cancun area that cater to families (like have suites and partner with Fisher Price to have toys, high chairs, etc).  I always thought that would be a great way to go.  Time in the pool, close by to let her nap (not out sightseeing - you'll just stay at the resort), you don't have to lug a ton of supplies with you, etc.

This is one I'm talking about .  We might have done something like that this year but instead we're going to Florida and staying in a condo.  We'll drive to Disney for one day.

  • to me Disney is really expensive and if you're wanting it to be a good experience for her she is too young. DH and I plan to take our kids one day (probably in conjunction with SIL and BIL) but want the kids to be 46" tall - the cut off height for most rides.... DH and I went for 2 days a few years ago and paid approx $300 for just tickets to get in. I dunno, I've never been as big into Disney anyway but that just seemed ridiculous. So if I'm shelling out that kind of money, I want my kids to remember Stick out tongue

This. Too me Disney is a special and big money vacation that I would want my kids to be old enough to remember and appreciate. I've never been and DH went a few times as a kid - which makes it even more important that we go at a time when we aren't going to be dealing with a possible fussy toddler and important routine schedules (naps).

I know Star made it work for them, but I think she has an extensive knowlege of the park and it is something they can afford to do again later.

  • Yes I agree that it is expensive, but if it would change anyone's minds... hotel would be free since we would use MIL&FIL time share points (they have a time share and go 2-3 times a year). They would be there to watch Evie whenever we need and could take her for the whole day if needed... May be sharing a suite with them..
  • We plan on going to Disney World for Taryn's 5th birthday. We went to DisneyLand when my youngest sister turned 5 and it was great and she had a blast, so DH and I thought that would be a good age. Tessa will be 2.5 at the time, but I think it'll be okay.

  • FWIW, I went to Disney when I was 4 and barely remember it, but I do have a few great memories from the trip. I don't think I'd take a kid younger than that.

  • We don't plan on taking the girls to Disney until Abby is 7 and the twins are 5.  I went when I was in kindergarten and barely remember it so we want to wait until the twins are at least 5.  Plus I do not want to deal with a stroller, diapers, car seats, etc when we go.  I want them to be able to go on the rides and whatnot.  Plus it gives us some time to save!!!

    Here comes a novel!

Of course as everyone knows, we go every year.  So with Natalie, we have been when she was 7 months and 19 months, we will be back in November 2012 when we have an almost-3 year old and a 5 month old.

With your parents going 2-3 times a year and being timeshare holders (I'm assuming it's on-property DVC since you said points) they will be able to help you a LOT.  In addition, you will be able to get discounted  Disney Dining Plan and park tickets through their DVC membership.

To clarify, children under 3 DO NOT pay for park entrance, so they do not factor in as a cost for park attendance purposes.

With the rides-- it's only the big rollercoasters they primarily can't go on.  Natalie went on almost everything, including:  Haunted Mansion, Teacups, Winnie the Pooh, Snow White, Peter Pan, It's a Small World,  Pirates of the Caribbean, Nemo: The Ride, Spaceship Earth, Maelstrom, Rio del Tiempo, Journey into Imagination, Kilimanjaro Safaris, The Great Movie Ride, and I know I am forgetting even more, plus this doesn't include many other attractions.

In terms of the expense, I am willing to share a recent bottom line with everyone.  Last year, we stayed in a moderate level resort, got 7 day park tickets, 7 days worth of food, and rented a car.  With flights, our total for the 8 day, 7 night trip was 2200 for the three of us.  We waited for a deal via commercial or email to show up, and then booked.  Obviously everyone's opinion of what is "expensive" is relative, but I do not consider that expensive for a family of 3 and the length of time when it includes food and all activites.

I think for the average family who usually visits Disney 1-2 times during the course of their children's childhood years, I would not recommend going until the youngest is 4-5 at least.

For you, with your parents owning DVC that tells me there's a great possibility you will be able to go back more than that if you wish, and I would go if I were you.

If you have any questions or need tips/ advice on doing Disney with a toddler, please ask!  Helping plan other people's trips has always been a hobby and a passion of mine.  Good luck with your decision!
