Earaches

I have not had a freakin' earache since I was a toddler so I have no clue how to get rid of it. Is it something that will go away on it's own, do I need to see a doctor, something over the counter I can take?

I've been taking advil for the pain but I didn't know if that does anything else. It kind of hurts down into my jaw.

If I do need to see a doctor for antibiotics or something I didn't want to wait until it was too late and I'm back in my small hometown where urgent cares don't exist :)

Re: Earaches

  • Keep taking the Advil or some form of ibuprofen to reduce inflammation.  You should also try Mucinex and possibly Sudafed to help the ear drain.

It sounds like you might have an ear infection.  Do you also have sinus congestion?

I personally would go ahead and go to the doctor now in case an antibiotic is necessary.  Especially if you plan to fly for the holidays because if it is painful now, once you go under pressure in the plane it is going to get worse.

As a kid, I never had ear infections.  As an adult, I get them all the time now.

  • Heat also helps some. I would recommend seeing a doc too, just in case it's an ear infection or strep throat. Hope you feel better soon!!!

I'll take some Mucinex when I get home. I don't have any sinus congestion or any other symptoms of a cold right now. I may just make an appointment just in case. I'm not flying but I don't want to be miserable on Christmas either. Thanks :)

I'm actually the exact opposite. I had raging ear infections all the time when I was little. I was in the ER a lot and had tubes put in my ears. I haven't had a single infection since then. It's kind of weird.

  • Get yourself to the doctor!! Earaches are awful and if you have an ear infection the medicine will help immediately. They can also give you drops that go straight to the source of the pain/inflammation. Feel better!!

  • I had earaches for 2+years (no other nasal congestion or anything). Did allergy testing, shots, etc, and still had them. I was living on MucinexD. It was the only thing that would work. Finally I had septoplasty. It was marvelous... until I had Landon and my bones moved back to normal. Now, I'm back to earaches/infections.

My netipot helps some, and Nasonex. Mine are caused from swelling in my sinuses that radiates pressure to my ears.

My ENT did EVERY ear test possible on me, and they were all fine. Which is why he decided to do septoplasty to see if changing the anatomy would help.
