How much extra $ during deployment

Dh has his 1st deployment coming up.  Many of the guys in his unit have been talking about all the extra cash they make during deployments; but I really think that DH has an unrealistic expectation of how much extra money a month he will be making. I know that a lot of factors come in to play but can anyone give me a ball park figure of how much extra a month we will be looking at?

DH is heading over to Afghanistan and is Infantry.

Re: How much extra $ during deployment

  • I was getting something like $400-500/mo.  Not a bad chunk of change, but certainly not anything to put us in the 1% like some people think.

That is what I was figuring.  I do think that it is a nice bit of extra money, but it definitely isn't what he was thinking.

  • My husband has been receiving about $1200 extra dollars a month... the last paycheck though it dropped for some reason to about $950.... not sure if they were making a mistake that entire time... he's an officer though (and he's been in 15+ years) so his base pay is higher to start with.
  • I forgot about the tax free.

I had family sep pay ($250), hazard duty pay (I don't remember, but I think it was $125), hostile fire/imminent danger pay ($225),  and tax free.  So my $400 estimate was low.

  • I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • We are averaging 500 extra a month right now. I don't know what he is getting special other than family separation and tax free. Probably nothing.

  • I recall that it was around $500, but we put a big chunk automatically into savings and retirement, so the actual number was likely closer to $1,000.

  • If you guys can afford to max out his SDP, I really suggest doing it. A lot of people won't, because then you lose out on feeling super flush during the deployment, but 10% interest is difficult to beat.

  • It really depends.  H averages an extra $1k a month when he's gone.

  • We are getting about $800 more a month.  It's going fast though b/c I have 3 kids so I need extra help like a babysitter.  I also have a lady come clean every 2 weeks.
