I'm locked *IN* my house.

Argh! This is so annoying. It's my last day of work and all I need to do is have one conference call and clean out my desk. And where am I? Turning the house upside down looking for my keys! I should say right-side-up since the house is a mess, and I'm cleaning in hopes of finding them. Sigh.

Re: I'm locked *IN* my house.

  • Yikes!  Could you leave through the garden door or something and meet your DH later to get back in?  That way the front door is locked.

That sucks, sending you lots of vibes to locate your keys!  Must be baby brain! :-)

  • ugh... i hate that! I always worry about it - what if there was a fire and I couldn't get out? It doesn't seem safe to my American mind. Hope you find your keys!

I think the same thing! It doesn't make sense to me.

I can't leave through the garden because there's no exit to the street from there. It's all fenced in.

The cat sitter still had our keys from when she came in Thanksgiving and she popped by and gave me back the spare. Who knows where my actual keys are! They'll show up, I guess.

  • I used to do that so much when we lived in Amsterdam that we finally just left a spare set sitting by the door :)

Have a good last day at work!

I would always put my key back in the lock when I would get home because of this. Then pull it out and place it on the nearby shoe rack about an hour before DH got home.( Because if you left the key on the lock inside you couldn't open the door from the outside.) At night I absolutely had to have the key in the door. I didn't want to wake up in the middle of the night to an emergency and then not be able to find my keys to get out. I was also paranoid about fire because smoke detecters are optional in Switzerland and we didn't have one. They still build bomb shelters but don't use smoke detecters it's beyond my comprehension obviously. DH never bought me a smoke detector for my peace of mind either. Bastard.

  • Been there!  Except, in our flat, even if you have your keys, you still can't unlock the door from the inside Huh?

Yeah, I'm not too keen on this set up.  For our deadbolt, there is actually no key hole on the inside, just the outside, and no other way to unlock in from within.  Luckily, it's only happened once when DH accidentally locked the door when I was still home (and thankfully I was able to call the porter who had a spare key).

Wow. That's kind of scary, actually.

We have a key rack right next to the door because otherwise I would be turning the apartment upside down on a daily basis. I'm notorious for losing things if I don't give them an assigned place. When I leave the apartment, the keys are always in the right pocket of the jacket I'm wearing, or, barring a jacket, in the front pocket of my purse. Otherwise I would never find them to get back in.

This is the only time I didn't put them right back where they go and H grabbed them by accident. Yesterday was my last day at work and I ended up missing it! By the time I actually left the house and got to the office, it was closed. =/

  • My wife has the same problem way to often, so she desided to try and put the keys back in the door lock every time she enters the house.
    It's working for now.
