My daughter's first birthday is March 15. I should be coming up with some sort of theme, but am feeling blech. I was thinking butterflies, but nothing seems to really be jumping out at me. The only thing I don't want to do is St. Patrick's Day anything.
I need food/decor/favors. I think part of my block is that the weather is so iffy then. Not really spring, not winter. I also don't know if we'll even still be in this house, in a new house, in my parent's basement.
It's a family party 30ish people, adults and kids and no special dietary needs. They usually start 1ish and go until 6 or 7? If we do move it won't be as long.
Re: Anyone want to brainstorm?
My daughter's favorite things at her first birthday party were the balloons and the ball pit. I created a ball pit by having an inflatable kids pool and filling it with lots of those colored ball pit balls (Bought them at Toys R Us - the balls were also our birthday present to her.) All the kids loved it. We also had a butterfly theme, which we used for the invites, cake, banner, and balloons. I basically just picked butterflies because I found some cute invitations with a matching banner and napkins. (Being the mother of a one-year old, I didn't have alot of time to get too crafty and creative. haha)
I would say try to get inspired by a cake design or invitations you like. I could see a "Berry Cute 1 Year Old" theme if you found a strawberry cake you like. Or maybe have a "Mad Hatter" tea party and ask all the guests to wear silly hats - the kiddo would probably like that.

Have fun planning
We did The VEry Hungry Caterpillar, and all fo the foods were the foods in the book - Gilled Sausages (w buns/fixings)
Fruit salad (mandarin oranges, strawberries, plums, pears, apples, w a little OJ)
watermelon slices (bc th triangles are cute)
pickles
salami/cheese/cracker tray (the PF butterfly crackers)
Cupcakes (vanilla in the shape of the caterpillar, and choc/choc ones w a cherry on top for the choc cake)
Cookies shaped like ice cream ones for the favors
Spinach salad (the green leaf)
and then we decorated with red, yellow, blue, green, purple and orange balloons etc
We had a great time! Had a parachute and tunnel, although ball pit is a great idea as well!
I love the idea of the berry cute theme! And who doesnt love strawberries?!
Hi! I'm thinking Wizard of Oz for you...
esp. touching upon the theme of "There's no Place Like Home" if you have just moved are going to move etc. can play a DVD of the movie where ever you are and give away CD's with different versions of "Over the Rainbow" Patti LaBelle and several other artists have covered it.
Can play up all the different colors... inc. Yellow Brick Road, Ruby Red Slippers, Emerald City... also can dress up DD like Dorothy. (I've seen infant costumes from Halloween).
Not sure re: food - maybe just stick to whatever you like and then have a Wizard of Oz cake or something like that.
Good Luck and will let you know if I think of anything else.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and all of the entertainers!
I was buying some Christmas books and saw a very cute SesameStreet birthday book.
I am LOVING the Wizard of Oz theme! There is only one problem, and a really big problem. I've never seen the whole movie. I always got so scared that I couldn't watch the end
You can laugh. I also never realized how the Sound of Music ended. My mom turned it off before the Nazis came. It wasn't until recently I knew about the wedding. (I'm 36 too)
I may have to buck up and watch it.
Merry Christmas!!
