Nursery Furniture Layout Help?

image

I know I'm a bit early doing this, but DH is deploying in 2-3 months so as soon as we hear the heartbeat we're ordering furniture and starting setting up because I will be here alone and unable to do things. I'd rather get furniture placement right than trying to move things alone when I'm like 8 months and a blimp.

Now, I need to fit a glider in the room too, so I was thinking taking the closet doors off (because they open into the room and therefore consume a lot of useable space) and putting up a curtain rod (like screwing in those holders and using a pole to put curtains on) and putting the glider in front of the closet. Do you think that is good? Is there another place that might be better... like the corner next to the crib? Also putting the crib next to the window, is that a bad idea? Not right next to it but like a foot to the side?

If anyone has any suggestions or a better layout please let me know.

And no this picture is not to scale, lol.

Re: Nursery Furniture Layout Help?

  • I think I would swap the changing table and crib just incase the window has a draft at all and if I wanted to check on the baby at all the crib would be closest.

  • I agree I would switch the crib and the changing table.

  • That makes sense! Thank you!

Gah I hate the window placement in that room.

  • Ditto. I'd swap the crib and changing table then try to  fit a glider under the window. If that didn't work then I'd opt for removing the closet doors.
  • i agree that switching the crib and changing table. i don't think you need to remove those doors. we have a similar sized room and our glider fits into a slight corner, like near where your window is located with a lot of space to spare (we have the glider/ottoman combo, too).

  • I like the glider by the window - in that corner.
  • Firstly, congratulations! :)

I agree about putting the glider in front of the window and probably switching the crib& the changing table. Removing the doors might help now but when baby is crawling, it might be useful to have them on so you can keep him/her out of the closet.

Also, as an almost 8-months-pregnant blimp, I commend you for thinking about this now! I'm not even close to finishing the nursery and I wish I'd done more sooner (am slightly freaking out now)!

  • Thank you!

My only concern with the glider in front of the window was, well, due in August so not worried then, but more towards the winter when windows tend to be colder (because glass can only do so much) would that be too harsh on the baby?

I think I will try it in front of the window first for sure now, though. The space would be nice to have. Especially if that means I'd have room for a book shelf too!

  • I would actually put the crib on the wall opposite the changing table. Having the crib close to the door could give off too much noise and also if you want to check on baby during the day - the light from the hallway might startle them.

I agree that there could be a draft from window - but you can easily check that. I presume you will have some sort of black out shade or curtains - and that will be fairly heavy material and will help block drafts.

I would put the glider, maybe a little table and some books/CD player etc where you currently have the crib.

I changed DS room around twice after he was born ... sometimes you just find that certain placements make more sense once reality sets.

  • DD1s room is similar and I actually took the closet doors off and put a dresser/changing table in the closet. I used a tension rod with curtains. Above the changing table (on the closet wall) I put up some shelves for additional storage of extra diapers, wipes, etc. The closet had two hanging bars and I took the lower one down and left the top one up so nothing was in the way when we did diap changes.I fold almost everything except dresses, so I didn't mind taking down one bar. Not sure how big your closet or dresser are, but it might be an option for you. I also had a crib, glider/ottoman, two small bookshelves and small side table (with storage) in the room.

  • What do you ladies think of this lay out? room is approx 13 feet long by 9 feet wide. window is almost entire length of the opposite wall from the door. only the closet door width is wall there, the rest is half wall height window with two parts that open.
