Baby Grace Annabelle made her appearance on the 23rd, weighing 8lbs 6oz and 20.5 inches long!
I woke up Friday morning at 8:15 and thought my water was leaking so we went into the hospital to be checked about an hour later and they let me go back home as my contractions were only starting. My contractions were coming about every 4-5 minutes, but not lasting very long. I was on my side and really not comfortable, then decided to move to my hands and knees which turned out to be much more comfortable for me.
At about 12:00 I started having some bleeding, I called the midwife and I think there was some miscommunication about this being normal or not (totally normal) so she had me come in and again they sent me home. At this point my contractions were still about 5 minutes apart and only about 30seconds each. (I need to throw in a thanks to Tofu and family as they were on their way over here to wait for my groceries for me as it was all the food for my family's visit for the holidays.)
DH was absolutely wonderful and helped me breath calmly through my contractions on all fours over the couch. I called the midwife around 4:15 as my contractions were now about 3 minutes apart and 50-60seconds each. She asked if I felt like I could wait another half hour or so, so I said I would try. When I arrived at the hospital they checked and I was already 8cm and the baby's head was down right behind the sack of water.
I opted to go to the midwife led unit, I tried a little gas and air and hated it. I found breathing through the contractions and focusing my energy elsewhere with DH's coaching a big help. The midwife even commented to ask if I had taken a breathing class as I was doing well. Three hours later I couldn't not push and just as I told the midwife this my water broke. She checked and I was 10cm so they let me start pushing.
An hour and a half into pushing they bought in the doctor for an opinion as baby wasn't coming out, but her heart rate remained steady and calm throughout the whole labor. The doctor gave me a 15minute deadline before she was going to try to use the vacuum, I told her this wasn't something I wanted unless necessary. Well I guess that was the motivation I needed because 15minutes later I was making enough progress and 29minutes later my little lady was born all on her own. She opened her eyes immediately and started crying. We had lots of skin to skin contact and she fed for a good hour. I had a second degree tear that needed some stitching, somehow this was the part I was most anxious about but my midwifes were fantastic and I felt nothing.
I'm so happy I was able to have the birth I wanted, but owe a huge thanks to DH as I couldn't have done it without him. We were home the next day by 2:30 and everyone is doing well. Dad and I are so overjoyed and happy that baby made it here for the holidays!
