I know a few of you have lost some weight recently. How did you go about it?
I believe that weight loss is about 80% diet and 20% exercise. While I would like to figure out some sort of exercise regime, I'm more concerned with diet.
I know that I need to cut back on soda intake so I'm going to make it a habit to fill my water bottle as soon as I get to work and the same with when I get home. I know I need to increase my fresh fruits and veggies; how do those of you with small grocery budgets make this happen, especially this time of the year? What's the ruling on carbs? Protein?
I don't necessarily want to count calories, but if you think it's a good idea, I will try. Is there a decent app for an Andriod phone that will do the totals for me?
For exercise, I will probably figure out a way to work the Wii Fit exercises or a post-baby exercise DVD into my day. I can't afford a gym right now and it's soon going to be too cold to run. Unfortunately, we only have a small living room, which also double's as Ella's play room, so we will see how long using the Wii or DVD will work... Otherwise this spring, we'll be back to family walks, and I'd like to start running again too.
Yea, this is somewhat of a new year's resolution, but I'm the type that if I don't have a plan in place when i want to start, it's not going to happen.
Re: Weight Loss ?'s
Oh, and I suppose it would probably help to know that I have about 30 pounds I need to lose to be down to a healthy weight. I'd like to do this by oh, say, May 26, 2012.
I just downloaded MyFitnessPal. I ate more than twice what I should have today according to my entries.
I'll have to look into my fitness pal. Sounds cool!
i've done WW and I've done SouthBeach/low Carb. What works for my body is low carb. I start with two weeks of very low carbs (20-30) and then add in complex carbs (bumping up to 50ish) and eat that way until I lose enough weight. Then I do low carb 2 days out of every week to maintain. Once I'm up 5lbs I go back to strict low carb until the weight is gone and start over.
I'm not a morning person, and our gym is down by the girls' rooms, so I work out after I've cleaned up dinner. That's daddy's (only) time to play with them one on one.
Good luck to everyone starting healthy eating/exercising programs! I'm right there with ya with about 25lbs to lose.
Fun fact: I remember one year we did a fitness challenge where everyone paid $5 to participate and the winner with the most % lost got the money. BabyRN won that year.
I wouldn't mind doing something like this for 2012.
I have had good luck using Sparkpeople.com. It helps you set your weight loss goal and sets up a calorie range as well as fat grams range and you can see how your meals average out daily in terms of carbs/fat/calories etc. I tend to eat mostly the same things for breekfast/lunch so I save those things in my Favorites file and it is really quick and easy to enter my food each day. Plus, having to actually SEE in print what I am eating helps me stay on track!
I have watched my calorie intake and most particulary cut back on my eating at night. I now have a small dinner and no late night snack like I used to. I also try to run 4-5 nights a week even when its cold. I dread it but I always feel better when I do. So far I have lost 18 pounds since August 1 and weigh a few pound less than I did on our wedding day so I am pretty proud of myself. Good luck to you!
I have recently lost about 20 lbs. I work out regularly but I have for a while. For me the weight loss really came from portion control. I don't count calories but I try to eat foods that I know are better for me. I cut out all soda, my vice was diet soda and kicking the habit I think made a huge difference. I now drink green tea, black tea, or water most of the time. I try not to get a serving of anything bigger than a deck of cards. If I'm eating a one pot sort of dish I scoop out what I normally would before cutting back and then put back about 1/4 of it.
When I first started, I would quickly finish my food and then feel like I wanted more, but when I waited it out 20 minutes so my body could realize it was full I found I really wasn't hungry anymore. Now that I have gotten used to better portion sizes I feel satisfied with much less as well. I feel like I can also indulge in things I really love because I have learned to have control over the amounts I take in.
Laceymb said it well!
Portion control is key, so is working out, and you're right the 80/20. You also need to realize you can't deprive yourself of something, you'll just want it more. SO if you want a piece of chocolate, have one, but don't eat the whole candy bar, you know?
I've read that running a mile and walking a mile equal about the same amout of calories burned. That's the next thing, it's about calories IN vs. calories OUT.
