anybody been to universal studios?

we are thinking about heading there for vacation (the orlando one) in march or april. there are only 3 resorts on the property, all of which are pretty spendy, but all the reviews i am reading for hotels nearby the park are pretty mixed, which is super annoying.

i posted on the travel board, and i keep reading tripadvisor and hotels.com and such, but has anybody here actually been and do you have any recs? we aren't really high maintenance, and we like shuttles, but that's about it. also, if you've been and have any advice about the park i'd appreciate that too.  i mostly want to go geek out at the harry potter portion, but we've never been so anything is helpful!

Re: anybody been to universal studios?

  • We went a couple years ago, before HP, and we stayed at the Royal Pacific Resort.  It was nice to be on the property because we could take the boat to the parks and to the other resorts to go swimming or to the shops.  There is also a path that you can walk along if you dont want to wait for the boat-shuttle.  I personally love to save money (we took the metro bus from the airport to Universal, and checked out of our Disney hotel and hung out by the pool with our luggage until the 2am shuttle), but I have come to appreciate being able to stay on the property and go back and forth as we please.  To me it is worth the extra money because I just can't do an entire day at the parks without a break, I get tired and grumpy and it just isn't enjoyable for me or DH. lol I love going early before the crowds, going back to the hotel for a swim / nap / lunch, then back to the parks for the evening / night when more of the LOs are gone.

Either way you'll have a blast!  Are you going anywhere else?  We rented a car for the day so we could drive to Kennedy Space Center and it was really neat.

  • thanks for your input!  the only time i've stayed at a resort inside a property was at disneyworld, and i was in 6th grade so i definitely don't remember the logistical benefits, just the fact that yay! we can ride the tram inside our hotel! haha. i will have to investigate the resorts more because i didn't realize you got early entrance and such but that might be worth it. also good to know about the bus because we have done that in hawaii and other places but i wasn't sure what the offerings were there.

i'm not sure if we will plan on going elsewhere or not. i forget there are other things to do in that area and you are the second person to mention kennedy space center, so now i need to check how far that is and such.
