Updated: Prayers/good thoughts for youngest DD please.

She's been sick for 10 days now.  The first trip to urgent care (in Florida while we were at Disney) they diagnosed her with an upper respiratory tract infection and gave her antibiotics.

Four days later she was no better and still running a fever of 102+.  Another trip to urgent care on Christmas Eve where they tested for flu and rsv.  Both were negative.  They did chest xrays that showed maybe a tiny bit of pnuemonia but the doctor wanted a radiologist to look at the films.  The radiologist said they looked fine.  Diagnosis was some unidentifiable virus and she should be better soon.

This morning she has a fever, sores on her lips, swollen and bleeding gums and vomiting.  She's lost 2+ lbs in the last week because she won't eat.

She's at the pedi right now with DH and I'm just praying they don't say it's just a virus.

She actually asked me this morning to call her teacher at daycare and ask her friends to pray for her.

Update:  The pedi immediately recognized it as the primary outbreak of herpes simplex virus.  Her big sister developed a cold sore right before we left for Disney and I'm sure that's where she got it from.

  • Does she have foot and mouth disease? My doctor said that it goes around daycares and involves sores in the mouth and high fevers.

    Overview

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral illness that usually affects infants and children younger than 5 years old. However, it can sometimes occur in adults. Symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease include fever, blister-like sores in the mouth (herpangina), and a skin rash.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is caused by viruses that belong to the Enterovirus genus (group). This group of viruses includes polioviruses, coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, and enteroviruses.

    • Coxsackievirus A16 is the most common cause of hand, foot, and mouth disease in the United States, but other coxsackieviruses have been associated with the illness.
    • Enterovirus 71 has also been associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease and outbreaks of this disease.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is often confused with foot-and-mouth disease (also called hoof-and-mouth disease), a disease of cattle, sheep, and swine. However, the two diseases are caused by different viruses and are not related. Humans do not get the animal disease, and animals do not get the human disease.

We're old pros at hand, foot and mouth.  She's had it twice before and both older DD's had it as toddlers.  If the sores had showed up in the beginning I would have known right away.

I had this as a little kid--like 3 or 4.  I don't really remember it, but it was awful.  I have heard about it going around recently (within the last 6 months or so)

  • Glad to see you finally got an answer! Hopefully she is feeling better soon. Poor little doodle. :( When I first read your post I immediately thought she might have swallowed a button battery. I hadn't heard about it, but some of the other nesties on the baby boards were talking about kids getting poisoned from swallowing those small, flat batteries that are in all kinds of toys, light-up Christmas ornaments, etc.
  • Glad they figured out what it is!  Hope she recovers quickly.

  • Thanks ladies.  I remember now going though this with my older DD's when they were even younger than Tori.  I'm just glad that future outbreaks won't be anything like this.
