Toronto recs?

Since H only gets two weeks of vacation this year (Crying) and 1 is already taken up from our Myrtle Beach trip, we anticipate a few long weekend getaways.

So we're trying to pick places we can get to reasonably quick.  Toronto is about an 8 hr drive from our house, so we figure if we leave Thursday night and spend the night in Port Huron, we can be in Toronto by noon on Friday.  So we'll have Friday afternoon, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning there.  Is that enough time?

What should we do while we're there?

Re: Toronto recs?

  • I think that is plenty of time. I have been to the zoo, Blue Jays game, and the castle/mansion (can't remember the name), and did some shopping. The first time we were there, the Titanic exhibit happened to be at one of the musuems so we went to that.  There is also the CN tower.
  • Are either of you hockey fans?  If so, definitely hit up the Hockey Hall of Fame.

You might consider a side trip to see Niagara Falls. I think it's only about an hour away from Toronto.

  • I think "plenty of time" is a bit of an exaggeration. You'll get a taste for the city, but will really just scratch the surface. I'm not saying it will be a waste of time - but let's be realistic. Whether you consider that "enough" time is up to you.

My vote would be to check out Kensington Market and the Chinatown area.

Think we should try to sqeeze in another day?

H doesn't get holidays off normally, but ends up only working a half day or so.  I'm trying to see if we can get him to take Labor Day off and not have it count against his vacation time...that way we can stay an extra day.

I think you should do what work schedules and budgets allow for. Wink

Really, if your original schedule is all you have time for, and you think it's worth the drive, you should do it. People have different approaches to traveling and I know plenty of people would say that it's not worth 16 hours in the car for that short period of time. Personally, I think it sounds like fun, but we are road-trip kind of people. And you need to be realistic about how much you'll actually be able to do or see in that timeframe.

I don't know if I think it's worth the drive because I've never been there.  But if everyone thinks it's a nice place to visit, then we'll definitely do it.  :)  I think spending the night in Port Huron or Detroit will break up the drive there nicely.  The 8 hour drive home is going to blow though.

Any other suggestions for weekends away around here?

We'll probably go back to Chicago, and I know H has been itching to take the boat over to Milwaukee.

We're running out of new weekend road trip getaways.

Ignore this vent:  I hate the owner of his company for taking away 2 of his vacation weeks.  He's been at that damn company for 18 years and give 60+ hours a week plus a bajillion phone calls when he's not at work.  What is another 10 days of paid vacation?  Assholios.

Toronto's great. I think you should do it, at least to get a taste of the city. Then you'll know if you want to spend more time there at some point in the future!

  • I'm assuming T will be with you?  I've not been to Toronto since Ben was born, but pre-baby we have been quite a few times.  Mostly for theater shows - Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, etc.  We've eaten dinner in the revolving restaurant of the CN tower, seen Niagra Falls, and had some great food and fun random shopping in Chinatown.  Eaton Centre is a huge underground shopping mall, so if it's cold or rainy it's a good place to get out of the weather and wander.  Yonge street is known for it's shopping too.

  • Thank you Chymes, super helpful!  We'll do it, even if we can't squeeze out that extra day from Labor Day.

Yes, T will be with us :)  Thank you for the recs!  I'm adding them to the list.

  • It is totally worth the drive for us.  I agree w/ Chymes market and Chinatown ideas.  When we were there, we saw Blue Man Group at the Sony Centre Theater.  Check what live shows will be coming when you're there.

We took a day trip to the falls and Ikea (the store, only because Jim had never been there before).

Our favorite times were just walking the city and stopping when something interested us.
