Just saw your blog (she is adorable, btw) and wanted to let you know that we were in the same boat with BFing/latch/finger feeding. Hang in there! I think we probably finger fed (after trying to get him to eat from the breast) for a little over a week and then it started to get better and easier. I don't have experience with them, but have you looked into a nipple shield (I think that's what they're called)? I think that amybyrd and morrigan both used them with success when they had latch problems.

Good luck and I hope everything else is going well!!

Re: **RockyMtn**

  • I also used a nipple shield very briefly.  LO would get over-excited and wasn't able to get a deep latch without it.  It took a few days of starting with that then taking it off once he wasn't as hungry (usually about 5 minutes into it).  All in all, we used it less then 2 weeks.
  • FWIW my sister still exclusively uses a nipple shield at 4 months. Well not exclusively, my niece also takes a bottle at day care.
  • It's good to hear that you ended up being successful with BFing even though you had to finger feed at first.  I'm hoping we'll end up latching soon, I'm really determined to make nursing work and will just keep working at it for as long as it takes.  I've tried the nipple sheild several times and it doesn't seem to make a difference.  We've been working with an LC and met with her today.  She says my eqipment and technique are great so it's just a matter of time before Aspen figures out what she needs to do.
