Please critique this menu

My co-worker is throwing a cocktail party for her friend's 40th birthday.  It's adults-only affair in her home, cocktail attire preferred, about 30 guests.  She and her friend's husband threw together some menu ideas, but she just doesn't think it's very cohesive.  She asked for my advice, and because it's been so long since I've thrown any parties (really, that should be my resolution for 2012), I'm deferring to the experts here.

  • Cocktail shrimp platter
  • Raspberry chipotle meatballs
  • Chicken salad finger sandwiches
  • Turkey avocado finger sandwiches
  • Prosciutto-wrapped asparagus
  • Mozzarella balls (some sort of fancy app another guest is bringing)
  • Melon and berry fruit platter
  • Veggie platter

I think the meatballs seem a little out of place.  I'm not sure about the sandwiches either, but since the guest of honor is a huge Hello Kitty fan, my co-worker is planning to use a cookie cutter to make the sandwiches into the shape of HK's head.  If there's another food (other than cookies) that can be made into the shape of HK, please let me know.  TIA!

Re: Please critique this menu

  • My first thought is that it's very protein heavy.  The one veg has meat wrapped around it.  I would probably skip the chicken salad sandwich all together and do a veggie sandwich of some sort.  Or spanikopita or mini quiches or some other vegetarian offering.  Instead of cutting all of those sandwiches, maybe cut a couple slices of bread and toast it for decoration on the platter?  I just think that it could get messy and be a huge PITA to do each of those sandwiches like that.

I would add some sort of starchy app- potato cups or a skewer of tortellini/olive/tomato combo marinated with italian dressing.  Oddly you have no dips (usually people have too many in my opinion).  So I'd add in some hummus with pita chips, english cucumber, and red pepper slices.

    Will there be any desserts?

  • Yes, there will be a cake and chocolate-covered pretzels.  I've also suggested individual mini cheesecakes or lemon bars.

  • The menu itself isn't bad, but it feels more like something you'd serve for a bridal shower than for a dress up cocktail party. If they're expecting people to come in cocktail attire the menu needs to better represent the overall feel of the party. Hello Kitty shaped turkey sandwiches doesn't really do that. I'm thinking the shrimp cocktail and the asparagus can stay. Other ideas off the top of my head thinly sliced beef tenderloin on a crostini, various things served in phyllo cups (smoked salmon mouse, a cheese of some sort)...

    This all the way!

  • I agree with the others that the menu sounds good, but not for this event. A nicer beef app would be good (as others have mentioned, on crostini or perhaps skewered on lemongrass skewers). I'd also add more veggie apps other than just a veggie tray. Maybe endive stuffed with goat cheese, beets and walnuts or another item along those lines, kale & white bean bruschetta or a fritatta cut into wedges.

Martha Stewart and epicurious have good ideas.

Please add more veg items. If I was at your party I'd have nothing to eat but some raw veggies and cake.

  • Thanks, everybody!  I appreciate the responses and have forwarded them to the hostess.  :)
