Anyone painted oak cabinets?

We have dated light oak cabinets throughout our house (kitchen and 3 bathrooms).  I think I have finally gotten DH on board with painting them (until we can afford to replace them).  I am thinking white in the kitchen, but I'd like the bathrooms a dark brown.  Anyone have special tips or know of any good blogs on doing this?

thanks.

Re: Anyone painted oak cabinets?

  • Lots of us have done it.  I have in the kitchen (gray-green) and one bathroom (navy blue).  My blog has a "cabinets" tag on the right side that should bring up all the posts on the two projects.

I had a hard time getting over the "painting perfectly good wood" hump, and an even harder time getting Calvin over it, but I'm really glad I did it.  So far they've proven to be very durable.  My bathroom's been done for 2 years, and the kitchen for 1.5.

  • This is the tutorial I used when I painted my kitchen cabinets. http://www.anythingpretty.com/2009/11/how-to-reglaze-honey-oak.html

    Here's my B&A:

Not a permanent fix, but a major improvement, I think.

This glazing technique looks so much nicer than straight brown paint.

I think it is Tarheels that has a link to regular brown paint not looking good...maybe she will post it.

  • ooh thanks you guys so much for the info. I'll definitely check out both those sites.  Beth I love your after - I think it will help convince my DH further since he really likes the darker look :)

Yes, I was just about to post how awful regular brown paint looks, but I'm blown away by Beth's glazing!  I haven't seen that before!

Really? I did it almost 2 years ago and AW it every chance I get! haha

ETA: Here's two of the doors up close. It's definitely not as bad as the brown paint in the link posted above.

  • Love the glazing!

We painted ours BM Moonshine (gray/white).  Here's the link showing how we did it and what we used: http://diyshowoff.com/2010/12/update-on-kitchen-progress.html  and the before/after pictures: http://diyshowoff.com/our-farmhouse-tour.

  • I am guilty of painting over oak cabinets with brown paint!

I need to re-take the after pictures.  But this gives you an idea.  The entire bathroom update cost me about $25.  Completely in our budget :)  It's just a temporary fix until we get around to remodeling the bathrooms in the house.  Brown paint is better than looking at the ugly orange oak, in my opinion.

I know, ha, where have I been!

  • thank you everyone so much for the links and PIPs.  I love it.  What about dark stain?  Any experience with that, good or bad?  I'm checking out pinterest as well...

Wow, this looks awesome!  I'm seriously considering doing this in our kitchen.  We painted our master bath and guest bath cabinets over the summer.  It was a huge PITA but did turn out pretty well.

I used gel stain after a relatively light sanding and it worked well. The one they recommend on Garden Web, general finishes, is good.

  • Here's a B&A of my sister's cabinets. She used a paint sprayer, which made a huge difference.

    I love General Finishes stains.

The nice thing about gel stain is that it is not a penetrating stain, so you don't have to remove the finish, which can be difficult to do with cabinets (that is why most people paint and not stain them).  It can take a few coats to look even, but the final result is great.

  • I came across this image using google search. I really hate our oak cabinets and we are new home owners learning the DIY ways. Do you mind me asking what color and brand you used in your kitchen? I also read the tutorial and it's a mix of glaze and color? I love the color and think it would look great in our kitchen.

    Thanks so much in advance.

I'm not sure if this was directed at me or not, but I used Benjamin Moore Branchport Brown, the color recommended in the tutorial. It's a 4:1 mixture of clear mixing glaze and paint which makes the color more transluscent so it looks more like a stain than paint.

  • thanks so much for sharing this *fabulous* idea!!

can you tell me about the Benjamin Moore Branchport Brown paint... is that a latex or oil based paint??? and what type of sheen (flat, satin, semi-gloss)??? also, how much paint did you buy to do the kitchen?? in the tutorial she used a sample size for her bathroom but i'm thinking the kitchen would require a quart or even gallon, depending on the number of cabinets...
