I feel like such a nerd, but I got really excited when the lady handed my new, pink, expires in five years residency card. I've been here for the last four years as a student and I've had to make a trip to the Foreigners Office (it's quite the process) every year. I was so excited to see this one expires in five years!
I also got my health card yesterday. The lady couldn't have been nicer (I was expecting a bureaucratic headache) and made it pretty painless.
There were only two problems:
1. Some nitwit either stole my ID number or was assigned my very same ID number (I wouldn't be surprised) in 2008. I'm thankful this isn't the US, otherwise it would've been a major nightmare. The funny/scary thing is that I know his name, where he lives/ed, and when he last worked because a government employee told me. We've gone to the national police, the civil guard, the immigration office, and the tax office to complain and try to get this changed but Mr. Portuguese Last Name is still in the computer.
What I don't understand is that he's an EU citizen - that paperwork is wicked easy - there was no reason to fake an ID card! What a weenie.
2. I just learned that the government doesn't have me in the system as working which means the taxes I'm paying on my grant can't pay for DH and my health care. I'm going to have to fight that one next week.
Oh Spain, I'm just thankful that yesterday's paperwork wasn't that painful!
Re: I got my residency card yesterday!
Yay for the headache-free residency card!
Good luck with the other issues.
I doubt the scammer will be sorted soon - I've just given up and figured it's just another "Oh, Spain..." moment!
Congrats!
I didn't have the UK equivalent of a SS# for 3 years, but I thought I did instead I had a tax reference number from when I received a tax refund my first year here. I gave this number to 5 or so teaching agencies and no one caught on WTF?
