Bike trailer for dog?

DH & I love to bike, but we won't take Cooper w/us even though he's a highly active dog (GSP). 1. he doesn't really like to be near bikes, hard to explain. I don't think he'd run nest to one, but he's ok if one rides by us & we are walking/running & 2. b/c I think the distances we'd like to go are too far for him (he's had 2 knee surgeries already). But we feel super guilty leaving him at home while we go for rides (yes, he is exercised himself before we do this)

I've seen these  & am curious about them. Obviously its something we'd have to try. Im not even sure Cooper would sit still in there or even enjoy being in the trailer. & Im not willing to spend $300 for him to flip out in it & ruin it after monkeying around w/transporting our bikes & the trailer to wherever we want to ride.

My thoughts are maybe to try & find a Burley at a rummage sale or something & maybe configure it for him (ie: reinforce the bottom & put a bed in there, etc). My sister has one that I know she'd let us experiment w/before we go & buy something. What I like about the dog specific one from DrsFosterSmith is that it folds down, which we need, but I see on Burleys website that they have the same thing. I like the DFS one better though b/c I know Cooper would rather be facing towards us than away.

Anyone have any thoughts or experiences? TIA!

Re: Bike trailer for dog?

  • DH and I went on a bike trail while away for a weekend and we rented that trailer along with the bikes. I have a 50 pound pit bull that is afraid of everything and lets just say she hated this thing. She didnt last 1 minute in it that she ripped through the fabric and jumped out. She was leashed to the inside of the trailer so that was a major potential disaster if we weren't going to slow and keeping a constant eye on it.

We ended up running with her next to the bike the full trail and she surprised us with running so well once she got into her zone.

On the other hand we did come across another couple with a lazy bulldog that just loved his trailer. I guess it would be great if you could rent one and test it out before buying it.

  • We always look at these things! I would definitely try the old CL or rummage sale for an old Burley before handing out the cash for a new one (but--if you do...and it doesn't work out--I'll raise my hand to buy your gently used one!)

I think the PP is right...it is obviously dog dependent..our mini schnauzer can ride in the bike basket of my bike--so I'm pretty sure she'd like a trailer....

I would totally rent a Burley from a bike shop--and try it out! Devil

  • my sister got one of these for their yorkie, and he's doing ok in there, but they just got it a few weeks ago, and he hasn't had much time to get used to it. Plus, a yorkie is obviously much smaller than your dog.

But i guess if you could try it out with one that your sis has, and just see if he likes it or not, that would be best.

Haha yeah, this is what Im afraid of!!! & he's def not lazy, I mean, he has his moments (like today he's been a total couch potato! Its so weird!), but he'll be the 1st to hop up & go for a 3 mile run w/me or to the dog park if I wanted him to!

  • I would get a $30 one off CL first.  Then if he hates it, you aren't out 10x as much.  :)  There are lots of Instep and other non-premium brands on there that would be fine for a trial (or it might be fine for realz too).

Properly, not necessarily specifically. Yet buttoning a shirt using a working puppy being a partner can be carried out securely. An individual should just become ready to include enough time regarding education, spend money on the appropriate products, and also stick to several basic safety principles to produce the experience equally entertaining and also risk-free to suit your needs equally.bike trailer
