Paint Colors

Hi All.

Look for an opinion on some possible painting ideas for an open concept kitchen/living room.

I want it to be mostly neutrals (greyish is on my mind right now) and want to add focal colors here and there.

Would it be terribly tacky to have an eggplant colored focal wall, and then some accents in coral and teal?

Please help.  I know paint is a "cheap and easy fix" but once I paint, I'd like to not have to worry about it for a while.

Thanks for your Time.

Re: Paint Colors

  • Welcome to the nest :)

Check the paint bio in my siggy for ideas.

And some from our last house:

SW Accessible Beige (the color under the landing is most accurate in sunlight, but the color warms up a ton in lamplight, as shown upstairs)

I think eggplant sounds great, but coral, teal and eggplant sound like a lot.  You'll have to use one or more of those colors sparingly for it not to look like a fun house.   Choose one as a main accent, one as a secondary accent, and use only one just a tiny bit.

PS - Susie, if you see these pics, you can steal them for the bio.

  • I like the eggplant idea, and I love coral with eggplant, but I think all 3 colors would be a bit much. If the coral accents are in things like throw pillows, or other decor, rather than say trim on the walls, I think that would be best. Not sure if that's what you are thinking already. My only thought with the gray and eggplant is that it might make your room look dark, and appear smaller. I think if the gray you choose is pretty light, and you have a lot of natural light in the room, it could look really cool.

I like this color scheme with a light beige with the purple walls (not quite eggplant).

This is a nice color combo - from Martha Stewart's website -- the colors are Caponata and Thicket.

This site has some nice ideas of how to use purples:

  • I think the eggplant would look good with teal....I think it would be really different and interesting.  The teal would add nice pops of color to the darkness of the eggplant.

  • Eggplant, coral, and teal might be a bit much! Have you thought about using a maroon interior paint? We recently painted a focal wall in a deep maroon with tan walls surrounding, it came out beautiful!
