Ear infection help?

I feel like a new mom all over again trying to figure this out! I know some of you are (sadly) ear infection pros and am hoping you can give me some advice. As a lot of you know, Brody was super sick for most of last month starting with the stomach flu and ending with a double ear infection and thrush. We did 3 day of Rocephin shots for the ear infections. As of the second day of shots the pedi said the ears still looked pretty bad (bulging, puss, etc.). DH took him for his third shot since I had a meeting and he said they said the ears were looking better but that's all the details he got. That was about three weeks ago. Fast forward to this week and he has gotten a little cold. I noticed he sounded hoarse when he woke up Saturday and he has just had a little runny nose/congestion but acting fine. He also has stopped eating his bottles. He will take an ounce or two and be done. Still eating solids like a little piggy. Anyway, last night he did NOT sleep. Up every few hours crying but would fall asleep when I rocked him, then wail when I put him back in his crib on his back. He finally settled down after I gave him some Tylenol which makes me think something was hurting.

So I am wondering- do you think this could possibly be another ear infection? Ella has only had one in her entire life and Brody has only had this round of doubles. It just seems soon to have another but I'm wondering if maybe they never fully cleared and this little cold maybe flared things up again? He isn't running a fever but has red cheeks and glassy eyes. The no sleeping and not eating his bottle thing is what has me wondering. The pedi is closed today so I'm debating whether to go to urgent care or see how the night goes. Thoughts?

Re: Ear infection help?

  • I definitely think it could be another ear infection. Isaiah had ear infections practically nonstop this summer (even after rocephin shots). He has tubes now and has had ear infections a month apart.  This last time the only clue to the infection we really had was that he wasn't sleeping well and would sometimes grab his ear.  He hardly ever runs a fever with it.  I think it'd be completely reasonable to take him to urgent care today! However, I don't think it'd be bad to wait a day and see and be able to take him to your own pedi. hmm, I guess that was a long way to say I don't think it's too soon to have another ear infection...  Good luck!
  • The biggest indicator to me with ear infections is usually a little congestion, but when sleep is disrupted for a normally good sleeper is when I worry. Especially when back sleeping...it drains down and hurts. With JoJo she sleeps on her belly, but would wake up in pain if she flipped to her back. My guess is another one and I would take him in.
