Question for RN's out there

Hi Ladies,

I have a degree in another field and I am looking at making a career change to nursing.  I want to obtain my degree the quickest way possible, any suggestions on which schools and program I should look at?  I contacted CSU Long Beach and they are going to send me info, but it's a 3 year program.  I was also told that I would not be able to continue working while in the program, so how are people paying the bill who are going back to school.

Any advise or direction is greatly appreciated.

Stacey :)

Re: Question for RN's out there

  • Hi Stacey!!!  Hope you're doing well. I mostly lurk on the board now (via Google Reader!) so I haven't been on for real in a while.

Anyway, my friend did a program at Santa Monica college and it was relatively quick and inexpensive.  She now works in the ER at UCLA.

    HTH!

  • Since you already have a degree in another field, an associate's degree program maybe something you might be interested in.  I went to County and many of my classmates were just like you - they had degrees from other fields.  It is a 2 year program after you're done with your prereq's.

It is still recommended to not work while going through any nursing program because it can be intense and stressful.  Some people move back home home so that their parents can support them or they find a way to survive on their spouses income.  Others work on the weekends anyway, but it is very tough.  After the first semester of nursing school, many students decide to apply to hospitals as CNAs because of the flexibility to work on weekends.

  • Thanks for the responses ladies.

Hi Saige, hope all is well.

I have twin sons now, they are 8 weeks old.  Don't I have great timing to think about going back to school with 2 new babies.

  • How funny, I did the same thing! My boys were about 3 months when I started going back to school to get my AA in nursing. I also have a BA in another field. I am currently going to College of the Canyons to do my science pre-reqs, then after I will apply to a few different community colleges. CSUN has a 1 year program if you already have a BA, but they have more pre-reqs.

    Congrats on your twins!!
