Newbie sewer making basic curtain panels.
I want to make basic panels (probably lined) for my DR that I would hang on my existing rods with clips. This seems pretty straigforward, but i certainly don't want to bite off more than I can chew.
Good idea for a newbie to tackle?
Tips/suggestions/things I didnt think of? Pattern recs?
TIA!

Re: Newbie sewer making basic curtain panels.
If you know what fabric(s) you will be using, the advice might get more specific. But some general things:
---Iron everything first, iron the hem before you sew it, and iron again afterward.
---The curtains should be at LEAST 1.5x wider than the window, up to 3x wider. I.e. if your window is 60 inches wide, your curtain should be 90-180 inches. For two panels, that would be 45-90 inches each.
---Your fabric won't necessarily (almost certainly) won't start out "square", meaning if you cut exactly 4" off one side of a 54" wide piece of fabric, you won't end up with a piece that is 50" all the way across. Measure the actual material that you're using, not the material that you're cutting away.
---I'm not sure what kind of clips you're talking about. I recently helped a friend make some curtains and the clips she used actually pierced the curtain. We used the button hole function to sew around the holes in the curtain. Practice with this on some scrap fabric ahead of time.
Good luck, and we hope to see some PIPs of the result!
Thanks so much for the detailed response. Very helpful!
I havent picked out fabric yet -- any suggestions as to what might work well and what I should stay away from?
Thanks again!
It really depends on what you want them for (do they need to block out light or is it more for aesthetics?), how big the window is, the rest of the decor, etc. Also, those clips... how do they work, how much weight will they hold, will they damage a more delicate fabric?
If you haven't fabric shopped yet, I would go to a store (a specialty store or something like Bed Bath and Beyond where they have displays set up) and look at window treatments to see what you like. Ask a sales person to help or give pros and cons of different types. Then, you can be more focused in fabric shopping. Finally, don't be afraid to get creative with the fabric-- I've seen some cute window treatments made from shower curtains.
p.s. nice screen name.
