yeast infection in ears

I have a lab and he gets these quite often.  He has not gotten water in his ears in some time now, but he still gets them.  I clean his ears twice a week, but I'm not sure how effective it is since he's 125 pounds and he absolutely hates it so he fights me the entire time.  I recently switched his food from chicken because I've read that they could be caused by food allergy.  We end up having to take him to the vet every time because we use up all the meds and the vet won't refill without seeing the dog.  It costs us about $100 each trip just to be told the same thing...

What are some ways I can prevent this?  I don't know if switching his food has helped or not.  He's going to the vet later this week, but I just wanted to know what ladies think.

Re: yeast infection in ears

  • Our lab constantly has yeast issues and we have found that eliminating starch has helped a great deal (potatoes, grain, etc).

He eats blue buffalo wilderness so he's already grain free, but I'll check for other starches. Thanks!

  • Our guy gets these (which is a little strange since his ears are pointed and upright) I'll have to check for starches in our food when I get home.

  • Lurker chiming in.....

have you given him any treatments for ear mites? My beagle used to get yeast infections as often as I changed my underpants and we also were at the vet at least once a month. We also changed his food and it did nothing. I felt horrible giving him all these antibiotics and asked the vet if it could be anything besides a yeast infection. She suggested treating him for ear mites even though on all the swabs she did, it didn't look like an ear mite infestation.

This was in April and he hasn't had an ear infection since we finished the mite treatment. Something to think about. Good luck.
