Relocating to Langley AFB, VA

Hi,

I will be relocating to Virginia in May/June timeframe. I will be stationed at Langley AFB. My hubby is also military and we have two 9 year olds. We are looking to buy a house close to the base and to good schools as well. Any advice, warnings, information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Relocating to Langley AFB, VA

  • I live in Hampton and it is hit and miss depending on where you are. I have always lived off of Fox Hill Road (very close the one of the LAFB gates) and have never had a problem. As a general rule I would look for something that is zoned for elementary schools such as Phillips, Booker and Asbury. And I realize they aren't old enough *yet* but Syms is one of the better middle schools, unless they qualify for Lindsay.
  • Thanks so much for the response. I will look into the places that you mentioned. I heard traffic is terrible in many areas so we are trying to avoid that as much as possible. House hunting is hard to do from here but we are trying to make the most of it. Again, thanks for the response!

  • It is not so much that traffic is terrible...it it more like the a lot of bad drivers. I honestly think it is because we have so many people here from so many different places. The main reason you will have traffic issues is when traveling from the Peninsula (where LAFB is) to the Southside (Norfolk, VA Beach etc). They are connected by bridges and a tunnel that goes under the water (the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel). People seem to get scared and slow down when entering the tunnel which causes traffic to back up. It is not like that all the time though. As for traffic in Hampton, there really isn't any. I personally hate driving no matter where I am or what the conditions are, but Hampton is a breeze.

  • If your looking for close to base the Riverdale community is literally next to the base. It's off of Armistead Ave. there is a couple off other nice communities off the same main rd. as well.

Streets/areas to stay away from King St.,Shell Rd. any rd. named after a fruit, state or number.

Hope this helps and good luck!

  • Look in York County or Poquoson.  The tabb area of York will be the closest to Langley, right off 134/Magruder.

Poquoson is w/in York County, but is a separate township.

These are the top school systems in that area, w/o getting too far and heading up toward Williamsburg.
